What was it like back in the old days?

I've only been doing adult for 3 years. I've had some mild success but I always wonder what things would have been like if I started in adult back in 1997 when I started doing other non-adult affiliate marketing. Did you make twice what you make today? 5 times as much? What has your company done to adapt and push forward?

rock-reed 12-14-2012 01:35 AM

Started in late 1998, by Mid 1999 I was making $25,000 a month and only working like an hour a day, and just bullshitting around work

Webmaster Advertising 12-14-2012 01:36 AM

The shows were awesome, the money was awesome, the people in adult were awesome... You could also sell content shoots to magazines for $3000 a pop ;)

Jakke PNG 12-14-2012 01:49 AM

Started in 1996. It was easy money. However, in retrospect I could have done a billion things better and I would have retired in 1998. However, here I am. :)

Modern day gold rush. Vein's tapped now though.

Yep, I wonder what it would have been like if I would have just worked 20-30hrs a week rather then 5-10. :pimp

My business plan for when I can go back in time - go back to 1996, buy 100 domains, sell them in 2008, retire. All in all, a few hours work could have resulted in a few million $$$$ profit

BlackCrayon 12-14-2012 08:50 AM

it was too easy really. it made me lazy. making 10k a month at 21 working only a couple hours a week and spending the rest of the time partying did not work out well in the long run. had i been smarter and not thinking it would last forever i'd be better off now. i wouldn't even attempt to get into adult now if i were starting out. i don't even do much adult now, there is much easier money elsewhere.

signupdamnit 12-14-2012 08:54 AM

5 to 20 times as much per visitor. So for every $1,000 you make now you would have made between $5,000 and $20,000 then. Also for the little guy it was easier to obtain traffic. So for most double or triple that again to get a general idea.

Bottom line: $1000 now = $10,000 - $60,000 then :upsidedow

But most of us were incredibly lazy in those times as we've all admitted. ;)

Check out this for conversion ratios back then. https://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=992899 Some people will bitch but overall it's in the ballpark. In the early 00's if someone converted 1:1000 I thought they were shaving. If someone converted 1:1000 in 1999 I knew they were shaving me.

Now for most affiliates if someone converts 1:1000 they are a good sponsor on the straight side of adult.

There's a lot more to it such as more bad countries and more competition but you get the point.

Rochard 12-14-2012 09:13 AM

Oh the good old days were great - contests for cars and motorcycles, giving away trips....

omgt 12-14-2012 09:38 AM

in 10 years the conversion ratio dropped by 90%
bit of an eye opener.

LOL! Yeah, the shows were really over the top. People like Ron Levy giving away supercars and spending $100k just on booth space, parties and free booze for webmasters.

I started in 1993, doing billing for Virtual Dreams, (all manually, via BBS). Got out to run call centers in 1996, then got back in to adult in 1999, as billing was becoming automated, and made a ton of money in billing right through 2004/2005, (when things then started to slow down).... and spent it as fast as I made it. (Learned a big lesson there). No regrets, I have some amazing memories and experiences, and what else can you take with you?

Now most of my billing and banking business is outside of adult, probably 60%. I get in suits and meet with bank owners and lawyers. The money is still decent, but there is a hell of a lot more work to it now, and the extravagant living has definitely toned down....

Overall, what was it like?

It was like a big moving party of good friends going from city to city, drinking and having crazy adventures, every couple of months, Everyone was making cash, and everyone was going crazy having fun with it.

Now most of us "OG"s are married, with kids... :thumbsup

I'm glad I was there to live through it, it was a blast.

there was not enough hours in the day to work, Started in 2000 doing everything I could think of doing and didn't know shit about any one thing but made so much with anything I did.
I posted my pay site to get some laughs that was making 100K but Paul Markham had to ruin the thread thinking I was talking about how great it was, back in the day it was great but goes to show you anything made money it seemed. I remember a 3 month span when it converted 1:25 money money money

SuckOnThis 12-14-2012 10:26 AM

Google fucked it all up. Used to be much easier because it wasnt difficult to rank well on at least a few of the big search engines. Excite made me tons of money, sure do miss them. :(

woj 12-14-2012 10:30 AM

at least 10x more profitable... take what you make now, and multiply by 10, that's how much you would make back then with the same effort... :2 cents:

RSD 12-14-2012 10:58 AM

Atm working my ass off, paying shitload of tax.
Oldies spent all the fucking money back then and now complaining. The whole world is in a fucking crisis. Why? Because oldies spent all the fuckjng money. Big cars, big house lots of food.

sojproductions 12-14-2012 11:09 AM

RSD 12-14-2012 11:11 AM

Are tubes still profitable? Made some really cool tube scripts, just need to translate them. Is it worth it?

The Porn Nerd 12-14-2012 11:16 AM

If only Paul Markham was here to school us on the 'good ole daze'.....:(

Dirty Dane 12-14-2012 11:23 AM

All tube movies were in black and white.

arock10 12-14-2012 11:32 AM

I didn't start early at all but I've just noticed its more and more work to make less and less.
