Have you ever burned out a CPU by running it too long?

I've been doing some hardcore video encoding lately (about 14 hours a day). I'm wondering if this will ever burn out my CPU since video encoding basically runs the CPU at 100% the whole time.

hmm it must shorten the life of the CPU for sure

Dirty1 02-18-2003 05:09 AM

not likely- think of thousands of servers still running at at PII 266 full speed for 5 years - your CPU will look like a 286 before it burns out

Worry about moving parts

we had some problem last summer- our AC was broken and it was really hot day in office.

So what happened? Did your CPU overheat and die?

Mr.Fiction 02-18-2003 05:18 AM

Yes, of course you can burn it out. You should never run your computer for more than a couple hours at a time. You need to turn it off every few hours and let it sit for a few minutes, then turn it back on. It should all be in the manual!

Jesus. That processor will probably be around long after you're dead, I wouldn't worry about it.

What Interlude said. Lack of cooling kills processors under load, not the load itself.

The cpu should be fine.. just make sure your computer has a bit of ventilation and the fans are working.

My puter has been running for a couple of years straight now with no problems besides the occasional reboot or power blink.

Long ago, I put a desktop computer together and didn't ground out the board properly, and it burned up... smoke and everything
:1orglaugh

Course, that was the board, not the cpu
