I know google prefers updated, quality content. But what if it's faked?

I noticed some people doing this and won't do it myself because it seems to risky but, what I'm seeing is people "fake" updating their site.

So they'll have the same content but changed the date of the update on the old copy.

Will that result in a penalty of some sort? That was my guess.

That's an old trick. Not sure if that still works after Panda though. Better to go with original content.
