Warm Destination Relocation

If you were to pick up things and just move to a sunny destination and just peddle porn from the warm sun, where would you go?

Bahamas? Costa Rica? South Am?
Spain? Greece? Southern Europe?
South Africa?
Maui ? :Graucho

I just posted this in another thread,

I am in Ft Lauderdale now, but for a 500k investment in the Bahama's you live tax free for the rest of your life.

I found a house on the beach 2 1/2 acres for 500K, real estate counts as an investment then that's it.

And only 20 min by plane from Ft Lauderdale/Miami, so this does not sound all that bad.

Regards,

Kevin

Well so far I'm thinking Spain & its islands... I'd really like to live in a civilized country with good healthcare, infrastructure and good Internet connections. I can't speak for Bahamas because I don't know it though.

How is the anti-American sentiment?

COLT 02-18-2003 01:10 AM

I vote Australia

1. Modern
2. Has ADSL and Cable internet
3. $1 USD = $1.70 AUD
4. Sunny and warm in the north (Brisbane)/Cooler and rainy in the south (Melbourne)

bhutocracy 02-18-2003 01:12 AM

Ben Folds of the Ben Folds Five moved to SA and said that in the US it was like he was on ok money and had fame, but moving to SA he feels like a millionaire... which struck me at the time I read it, even though at the time the exchange rate meant you doubled your money..

American people are usually really well-liked.. right now with Iraq and everything though there is anti-US government sentiment. Aussies are fans of understatement hence they hate steve irwin and sometimes are put off by loud brash "yanks" but overall it's all good and americans usually sway the ladies with their accents. You'd have to speak with someone thats visited though.

a friend said Perth is as close to paradise as Australia gets - that its big enough that you are in a big city yet the housing prices are relatively cheap compared to other cities and the weather, proximity to the ocean...are unparalled.

now if only you can figure out how to construct a stadium or two before they take the next olympics away from you at the last minute.

there was a one bedroom apartment a few doors down from this with the same view had a deck/veranda that rents out at US$88 a week.

never really looked into perth.. Australia is insanely east/south coast centric.. I think most people think perth is where they live underground in holes because of the heat :)

tornell 02-18-2003 01:48 AM

We only hate loud-mouthed, ignorant Americans who complain constantly because things aren't EXACTLY the way they are in the USA. We're not big flag flyers here and any sort of patriotism is quite muted. Everyone is glad they live here but nobody makes a big deal about it. There is also still a real sense of egalitarianism here. The dope is plentiful and reasonably cheap. We don't have guns but we have virtually no gun crime. You generally work things out with your fists here if you need to.

I like to use the McDonalds standard to compare costs of living in different countries. A large McValue Meal (burger, large fries and a large coke) here is around AUD$6 (US$3.50)...

However, getting in aint easy...

PS We drive on the LEFT side of the road!

Dveron 02-18-2003 02:39 AM

I'm on one of the Spainish islands at the moment and believe me it isn't all that warm down here this time of the year but from what I'm told this has been the worst winter for some time.

You can get 2MB Adsl for 140 Euros per month and rent on a nice apartment would run you about 1200 - 2000 euros per month.

SykkBoy 02-18-2003 02:59 AM

Hmmm, how hard would it be for an American to rent a place in Australia? i.e. tax issues/posessions issues, etc.?

Joe Sixpack 02-18-2003 03:23 AM

Here is some info on immigrating to Australia.
