Casualties Of Egg Industry: Male Chicks Ground Up Alive

I absolutely love eating eggs, but I wish there was a nicer way of doing this. :2 cents:

I don't blame you, I had to force myself to watch it. I don't want to stop eating eggs, but watching this leaves me in a difficult position. :2 cents:

wish a lot more care went into slaughterhouses

and would pay to know it did..

PR_Glen 11-26-2012 11:15 AM

any slaughtering process is hard to stomach.

Even if there was more "care" it wouldn't work out for the little guys in the end.

Same here, but I didn't give up eggs. A vegan girl was trying to convince me I should give up eggs, she explained why, I chose not to at the time.

Seeing it on video is more painful than hearing it described. :2 cents:

stick with organic free range :2 cents:

That's what I go for. I assumed that the male chicks would still be eliminated though?

buying off of a local small farmer might be the best :2 cents:

but I found this:

Mistreatment of the chickens could potentially lead a farmer to losing their organic certification. Thus some of the arguments from animal activist organizations that egg production is cruel and inhumane do not necessarily apply to organic raised hens. On the other hand, male chicks who are born on organic or free-range egg farms are still discarded, by the use of lethal gas, because they do not produce eggs

Choopa Phil 11-26-2012 11:35 AM

I guess i should stop eating 30-40 egg whites a day...

There was a guy not far from where I live who worked in a slaughterhouse, he's been charged with murdering a young girl.

Thanks for that, the gas sounds less bad than the grinder :thumbsup

How is this any different from hunting by humans or big cats? Have you ever seen the video where the baby lions play with the baby wildebeest? It is terrified and in shock, and they bite it and bat it around while it screams, then goes numb, then dies. Any predators are killers. They're born, bred, and selected to kill. If they kill poorly, they die out. We only have the good killers left today.

Humans and primates evolved because of the high caloric content of meat. Vegetarian apes spend hours and hours a day foraging. Humans evolved eating red deer, hunting them ruthlessly. Good hunters got laid, and here we are.

As we evolve further we can try to remove cruelty from our lives, but the fact remains that we came from predators. To eat something sentient, killing it first is humane. In the end, I would say that nothing wants to die.

I agree with the poster above that I'd pay more to have less cruelty but if a kid has to go hungry (and many do) because I have the ability to make that choice then....

Depends on the chicken breed, we've got dual purpose birds, they're reasonable layers, but also taste nice. We keep them all together and at about 10 weeks we split off the males for meat and fatten them up for a few more weeks (apart from 1 lucky boy who becomes 'Theloneus the Rooster'), and keep the hens for eggs.

I got no problem eating meat but not at that cost. Unfortunately if everyone adopted a vegan diet that would mean additional clear cutting of forests and the slaughter of other species (mice, owls, foxs, insects, etc) to support agricultural expansion. Having animals graze freely means no environmental disruption.

take it easy there, plenty of animals being killed while farming your tofu shit as well.

Nothing is pure, vegans just pretend they are.

Not vegan, just veggie.

not a fan of tofu either.

Even though the treatment of animals plays a big part in why I stopped eating meat its not the main reason. The last few generations of my family have died due to cancers of some kind and its been shown cutting meat out of your diet can reduce your risk of cancers.

Tom_PM 11-26-2012 12:35 PM

Take some small comfort from the fact that those chicks would not exist in the wild. They were 100% created for the sole purpose. Even if every chicken farm today released every chicken and chick, 99% of them would be killed by predators right away. It would actually be a problem because it would cause a generation of foxes, racoons, coyotes etc. more numerous than usual due to the huge new food supply that would run out quickly. Then those animals would suffer and die later due to too much competition.

GFED 11-26-2012 12:35 PM

OMG the male chicks are still ALIVE before they're killed! :o

Unless you're eating fruit/Veggies grown in your own garden or pesticide free you're exposing yourself to basically the same risks as everyone else. Most if not all are genetically modified regardless.

it's been shown that the sugar put into everything is "go juice" for all sorts of cancer

meat has been apart of our diets from the beginning..

everything comes down to exercise
