Just Installed Windows 8....

So I needed to reinstall Windows (currently using 7) and decided to check out Windows 8 before I reinstall 7.

Not as bad as I expected to be honest. I'll spend the weekend on it and report back.

Anyone else on 8 with some feedback?

SmutHammer 11-16-2012 09:06 PM

You can download a start menu and after setting all of your files to open with the right programs it is usable. I set up windows 8 on my other computer, but don't feel comfortable doing any work on it... not sure why, but I haven't done anything more than check emails, gfy, and surf the web.

I will not being upgrading my main computer to windows 8.

leg4 11-16-2012 09:12 PM

I'm not feeling very comfortable or stable with it either.

I keep coming back to my Windows 7 machine.

Windows 7 is a beast.

for now i agree 100 % with you , but just for now :)

Aric 11-16-2012 09:23 PM

Windows 7 is by far the best OS Microsoft has put out and I have no doubt I'll be returning to it. So far I can see 7 being much more productive than 8. But I'll spend the weekend on 8 nonetheless.

johnnyloadproductions 11-17-2012 03:01 AM

I'll be installing 8, free licenses to all engineering students. :)

moeloubani 11-17-2012 03:30 AM

windows 8 here, no problems, no crashes, nothing out of the norm so no reason to not keep using it, used to the metro menu system now anyways and most of it is exactly like windows 7

at $40 for an upgrade its not not a bad price for windows

SomeCreep 11-17-2012 03:37 AM

You poor souls. There is this computer out there called the "iMac"... and it makes any Windows PC look like a caveman tool from the stone age. Try it, the future is now.

Paul&John 11-17-2012 03:52 AM

The new DirectX will be exclusively only for Windows 8, so an upgrade is inevitable in 1-2 years :(

Tat2Jr 11-17-2012 05:58 AM

I bought a win7 computer 2 weeks before 8 came out, so I get it for $15. For that price I'll at least buy it. Not interested in actually installing it anytime soon, as I have actual work to do.

I will agree, if you are looking for a nice door stop, the iMac is quite handy. I was looking for the best way to get the most out of the $2k I spent on my iMac, that died just out of warranty a year later.

For a long time I left it on my desk next to my PC monitors. I did this so I could see my reflection in the 27 inch screen, and call my self a dick head if I ever though of buying another Apple product. This was quite successful and served it's purpose when I was tempted to buy a new iPhone a few month ago.

I figured now that I had learned my lesson, I could finally move on to a better use for my 27 inch iMac. Sadly I don't have a boat nor a lake to sail it in, so boat anchors are out. I do however, have this pesky door in my office that always wants to close it's self.

With great skill & a healthy DIY attitude, I managed to remove the stand from my 27 inch iMac and create a fully functional iDoorstop. I'm now quite certain that I have managed to get my money's worth from my iMac.

For me Windows 8 startup time is 6 secs, much faster than Windows 7.

Start button? Not really missing it. Right clicking lower left hotspot gives shortcuts to most things needed, and as for programs and groups that is what Metro is for. No need to have a desktop filled with shortcuts (although it is still possible to do so). Just click Windows key and choose program to start on the Metro interface.
If you really can't live without the Start button there is 'Start8' from Stardock.

I don't get all the rage about Metro - you don't have to use it.

Personally I feel I am working faster on Windows 8 after using it for about a month now. Besides, I like the option to dock an app and use the remaining 2/3 screen for desktop usage etc.

Windows 8 really isn't much different from Windows 7 except it is now both a desktop/touch OS. Is it perfect? No. Some things still need to be tweeked, and there is still room for improvements. I doubt Microsoft is going back in time with Windows 9 though if that is what some hope for. "Adapt or die". Isn't that what everybody tell us who don't like changes?

mightyjoe 11-17-2012 07:57 AM

Put it on touch screen machine and you will enjoy the technology of windows 8 :2 cents:

Ace of Spades 11-17-2012 08:53 AM

Windows 7 is working just fine here, no need to fix what ain't broken. :winkwink:

lucas131 11-17-2012 08:54 AM

windows 8 is just gui taken from xbox isnt it?

fris 11-17-2012 09:09 AM

win8 startup time is pretty fast

soopamanluva 11-17-2012 09:22 AM

installed it a couple of days ago and it's not bad at all. I have noticed better game performance and lesser temperatures of my cores and graphics.... and as fris said faster boot.

bronco67 11-17-2012 12:14 PM

I have it one of my machines, and while it's nothing earth shattering, I can't find anything to complain about yet.

You are a sheep. If you really think this is true you are a moron. If you technically think about it. Mac OS is based off of Unix, therefore making it extremely archaic. The entire structure of Mac's are ancient. Everyone but Mac users really know you are the poor soul who is stuck in a marketing machine called Apple.

I have an iPad and an iPhone. But cant stand Mac computers. My wife has an iMac and it sucks.

Aric 11-17-2012 01:11 PM

It's growing on me... no problems yet. I may stick with this for awhile.

That's unfortunate and rare. I have owned no less than 20 macs and have only needed to replace a hard drive on 1 once and back in the days when Ma clones were out for a year, I bought one and it broke too but under warranty. In my office at NETbilling, I have an original imac on the floor that still runs well but far too slow to use obviously, a G4 mac 400 (also runs perfectly but too slow, a Mac pro G5 (runs perfectly still also) and a newer mac mini that is pushing a 32 inch cinema display and and 22 inch monitor both and did it right out of the box with an adapter I bought.

Apple products run exceptionally well and the OS is fast and stable. There is something to be said for designing the OS and the hardware to run together instead of the clusterfuck that PCs running windows seem to be so often.

BTW - at NETbilling we replace PCs in our call center every couple of years as they just start to blow up, burn up power supplies, drives die etc.
We never have to do that with the Macs.

i'm using it since the first preview and I love it :thumbsup :thumbsup

crizatu 11-21-2012 01:55 AM

I was excited to get it but after using it for the last 2 weeks I miss windows 7. Google Chrome works bad for me in Windows 8.

Sure. But bringing it out as a desktop OS is just retarded.

He really does. Just like most Apple users. They have to justify paying twice as much for the same or lesser hardware somehow.

i keep catching the dickhead reflection of our designers who simply cannot colour shit in with anything other than a mac.

fuck macs in their stupid fuckin asses.

back to the topic though and bookmarking this thread to see what becomes of windows 8. 7 will do me fine for now...

when i was a kid i had a bunch of macheads who used to go on the same way. How stable and easy to use, how they don't break etc etc

and now make their living fixing macs.

go figure, yes?
