Saw my first commercial for the Obama cell phone today.
 

I had heard about it, but I didn't know if they had them around here. I was eating lunch and turned on the news and they had a commercial for it. Basically it is a free cell phone that comes with 250 free minutes and 250 free text messages per month. In order to qualify you have to be on medicaid, food stamps or other forms of assistance. They mentioned several things that could qualify you, but I can't remember them now.

The best part of the commercial is that the graphics and the voice over guy present it as an emergency phone so you can stay in touch with friends and family etc. They have an actor though who walks onto the screen, holds up the phone and with joy in his voice announces how he can now text his friends and keep up on all the latest information.

It was very interesting.

On my plan I don't have any. I hate texting though so even if I had unlimited I would rarely use them.

Were threads being made about this when the program started in 2008 under Bush?

The program actually started under Reagan, cellphones were added under Bush, but however you want to spin it...:winkwink:

I didn't know this. I had only heard about it a few months ago when the Obama Phone Woman became something the republicans used as a campaign tool.

here is the obama phone woman video. It is sad yet oddly funny at the same time. It is almost like someone doing a bad parody of a what they think a ghetto person should sound like.

My girlfriend has one. Along with her food stamps, aid for dependent children, housing voucher, free medical cards and 3 student loans spent on cocaine, it's one of the only reasons I keep her around.

The program was started in 1994. Landlines have a special tax on them that collects a special fee to provide phones to those who cannot afford it for whatever reason. This was back in the days of Ma Bell. It only makes sense they would carry this over to cell phones.

I remember when I was a growing up there was an older woman who lived next door to a us who had what was basically free phone service because she was on social security and had very little money. Probably the same program. It is now just modernized.
