What do you all think of the blue jays and miami trade???

I don't really like the trade for the Blue Jays. For the kind of money/salary they took in, I would rather have guys in the prime, not:

almost over the hill (Buerle), injury concern/slightly overrated (Reyes), 1 year away from Free agency (Johnson).

For that kind of money, I would take:

Felix Hernandez, Justin Verlander, and Robinson Cano (or Matt Kemp/Joey Votto)

Then I would be excited and ready to plan the parade. This coming season is going to be a season of disappointment and failed expectations from these trade.

At least Toronto fans can still cheer for their leafs.....oh wait :Oh crap

It will get approved. It would look too bad after the jays were clearly tampered with in stealing most of our coaching staff by divisional rivals and big spenders Boston just a few weeks ago.

Although it would be nice if it worked out. Would be nice to see Boston burn for another year after what they did in throwing Francona under the bus very classlessly :)

I dont like it for the Jays either they took on a guy in Johnson who had a mediocre year at best, Buerhle who will give up at least 30 hrs in that launching pad, and Reyes who is a leg injury away from being useless. Should be fun to see how it plays out though.

oh so for that kind of money you would like to get people who are worth double that and have no trade clauses? Yes, i would also like a ferrari for 20 grand that can drive in space....

No offence, but you sound a lot like jays fans who post on tsn. They learned the game from playing video games where you can make trades for anyone and offer nothing in return and there is an endless amount of money and running a business has nothing to do with it.

The trade was great for the jays at least and Miami got what they wanted in prospects and salary dump so that isn't being rejected unless someone is injured. It's ok to be happy and excited... if you are indeed a fan ;)

Not one of those players is a Free Agent this year.

So you would rather take Verlander? Wow I guess AA should just go out and sign him. Oh wait he is signed already until 2015 at which point he will probably command 25M a year. The Jays took on one large contract of a guy exactly in his prime (Reyes - 27 - 30 are the prime years and he is 29). He is healthy (160 games last year). JJ is a FA after this year so no risk there. If he does well we make a pitch for him. Beuhrle is an innings eater that might be old but is effective with the 3rd slowest average pitch in the league. Dickey just won the Cy with the slowest in the bigs. Bonafacio is in Arbitration so probably signs a one year deal and Buck is FA after this year. One ALL STAR player locked in so the risk is small.

The Jays have a good opportunity to compete in the East as it is the weakest it has been in a very long time. They spent some dough and if it works out or not it finally shows the fans they are ready to make some moves. We gave up some prospects, an anti gay SS (that shit doesnt fly in Toronto) and a catcher worse than Buck.

Could the prospects pan out? Sure but trading 3 of the top 10 prospects (not including 1 or 2) is not a huge deal imo.

You guys are missing the point, I know Verlander and the guys I mentioned are not free agents. I am merely stating that for the ridicious amount of money the Jays absorbed in those contracts of Buerle, Reyes, and Johnson, they could get better talented players like the ones mentioned, not over the hill (Buerle), injury prone overrated (Reyes), and mediocre last year (Johnson).

ps. I'm not a Jay's fan, just pointing out what everyone else is thinking about this trade. Notice the joke I made about the Leafs :winkwink

You are missing the point. Players like you mentioned are not available for any money. They are signed. The FA class this year is weak (I wouldnt sign Hamilton). This was a way to improve quickly without sacrificing much off the current roster. Improving via FA is not an option this year. Its as simple as that.

anyone who doesn't think its a good deal for the Jays doesn't know baseball...its so lopsided in their favour it might be blocked. Who cares about the money, its not like baseball has any kind of cap

I just said that in my previous post. I know they are NOT free agents.

The point is really simple, the Jays may or may not content this year with this big trade. More than anything, it's an ALL IN THIS YEAR because I don't see the benefit of this trade beyond this year. Yes, the Yanks and Sox will be the weakest this year than ever before.

But what the Jays fandom fails to see is the big picture when these 2/3 contracts handcuff the Jays after this year. It's going to be Vernon Wells all over again. What happens when the Yanks and Sox reload next year's FAs which they undoubtedly do. What then for the Jays when they have an over the hill Buerle and overrated Reyes.

I'm thinking beyond this year when I'm accessing this trade, not the obvious euphoria some Jay's fans are having wet dreams about. This trade does not favor the Jays beyond this year.

If anyone thinks this trade is good for the Jays, just think how good the Marlins felt about winning when they got Reyes and Buerle last summer? hmmmm we know how well that turned out for them.

They have two contracts signed to multi year deals in this. Buerhle and Reyes. Reyes is an All Star when healthy and he is healthy. He is the definition of a lead off man, something the Jays have not had for a long time. 160 games in a season is healthy. He got better as the year went on and still batted .287 with a career low BABIP. Buerhle is literally the only risk I see and the dude has pitched well his entire career and if you are trying to say he will get shelled in TO the man played in Chicago (a notorious hitter friendly park) for many years. Please find me a pitcher in the league that has pitched 200 + innings every year since 2001. I will make it easy for you, you wont. We have Bonafacio and JJ for this year whom are both quality additions.

So what is the risk? We spend a lot this one year and we gave up Escobar (TRASH), Mathis (spare parts). Adeiny Hechavarria could be a stud but has not done much yet. The two minor leaguers are not top 3 Jay prospects (5,6 and 10 according to fangraphs). So what did we give up? Money? Who gives a shit? Its money and Rogers has enough of it to throw some around. We literally got better at 2 starting pitching positions (by a large amount), WAY better at SS, a nice Util player that has speed and can play almost every position and an expensive back up catcher that makes JP expendable and D'Arnaud a potential call up.

Add to the fact the Jays still have a deep minor league team, a solid bullpen and the return of some healthy players (Bautista, Lawrie) the Jays are contenders.

Who cares about money? Rogers do, the Rogers family are notoriously cheap fucks. They have been for years. Even though there is no salary cap, if those 2 contracts handcuffs they Jays for years to come, just think how much money the Rogers family will spend on payroll in the coming years. They had years to spend good money on Free Agents in the pass and they have always cheaped out. The last 2 big contracts they shelled out bit them in the ass Vernon Wells and Alex Rios, and that Orioles closer a few years back (can't remember his name of the top of my head).

All I'm saying is that the Jays are going to be in for a disappointing year this year. Remove the hype of this trade, and this trade is not as good as it's been made out to be in the Toronto's press and Jays fandom.

Don't get me wrong, I like the Jays (not a fan) but I will say this again, this trade does not favor the Jays beyond this year. And Johnson if he has a good year, he's gone next year. So that leaves Buerle and Reyes which the Jays could have gotten last year for FREE (by free I mean they would not have to give up any prospects) and Adeiny Hechavarria looks good, very good. Tough prospect to lose.

Obviously you do not follow the Jays very much. AA has been saying for years 2013 was the year they have planned to spend money. This is not new this was the agreement that was made by Rogers and AA. If Johnson does well who is to say he won't stay? Buerhle is the only bad player in this entire deal. I would take Reyes over Hechavarria, and the two prospects 100 out of 100 times. We already have a better CF prospect in Gose and we have more minor league pitching than we can handle. Escobar and Mathis for Josh Johnson alone is a deal. Bonafacio, Buck and Buerhle are basicallyy throw ins. Who is to say we don't trade Buerhle AA is notorious for trading players he just got. The trade favours the Jays overall.

And if AA can trade Wells and Rios Im sure he can work some magic with Buerhle or Reyes if they do not work out.
