Obviously # 2 is the better choice aesthetically (on a white background) but the 90s emboss effect on # 1 could easily give a better response under the right circumstances. Split test it.

the blue is prettier but as a surfer makes me feel like i'm about to give you more info than i want to compared to the orange button (even though i know it will ask for the same thing).

Go with the blue one for sure.

I give a higher weight to this answer, since A) we don't have context here, and B) what we think is aesthetically pleasing has little bearing on how it might convert in your production environment. Run an A/B or multivariate (with other elements) test and choose based on that data. If you need help with A/B testing, hit my ICQ.

#2 looks classier and gives the end user the impression that you have a higher quality site and content to offer them.

The answer is always whichever tests better with your traffic. Always.

"register" will always under perform a call to action which implies a benefit consistent with the offer... i.e. "create a free account", "continue to free account", "claim free account" and so on.

However, that being said, I'll save the op some time. Make one green psychology of colour. Green == go.

Test green against one of your other colors. Then post back here telling me I was right.

The images don't matter, its the message. Register isn't that exciting. Anything with Free is a good start.

Orange is psychologically warm and reassuring. Blue is cold and hostile.

I'd go with #1 - but with the text style of #2.

edit - IMO using "free" doesn't mean much online anymore. I'd say most folks are savvy enough to know that "free" doesn't really mean free anymore and is usually a deceptive ploy.

I suggest changing the text to

"WOO YEA MOOTHER FUCKER B===D"
