What people don't understand is. Google made the city PAY for the fiber and installation.

"The 1-gigabit-per-second service will cost customers $70 per month."

impressive, and only $70 too :thumbsup

candyflip 11-15-2012 08:36 AM

They just started doing installs 2 days ago according to the site.

pornguy 11-15-2012 08:38 AM

I did not even have to fap.

sarettah 11-15-2012 01:14 PM

Yeah, they are installing in part of Kansas City Kansas and Part of Kansas City Missouri.

They stop about a quarter mile west of my house so I don't get in on it :(

.

dooglas 11-15-2012 01:31 PM

Omg I want that so bad lol.

CyberHustler 11-15-2012 01:39 PM

I was mad as shit yesterday when I found out they only service KC

kane 11-15-2012 01:49 PM

I was reading about this last week and I guess they will be offering the lower speed stuff for free, but what they consider lower speed is basically the same speed as my cable internet that I pay $50 per month for.

Yeah, that's what "Kansas City won the bid" apparently means.

I thought they applied for google to do it?

Colmike9 11-15-2012 04:41 PM

?Why did we pick Kansas City?? Milo Medin, Google?s vice president of access services said. ?We wanted to find a location where we could build quickly and efficiently. Kansas City has great infrastructure. And Kansas has a great, business-friendly environment for us to deploy a service. The utility here has all kinds of conduit in it that avoids us having to tear the streets open and a bunch of other stuff that really differentiates it from other places in the country.?

Babaganoosh 11-15-2012 05:00 PM

KC was an easy choice because of all of the fiber that runs through the area. Unfortunately the area they deployed in is the fucking ghetto. Most of the people in those areas are on food stamps and don't have a computer let alone internet. Can't figure out why they didn't build into the areas of the KC metro with money like Overland Park, Leawood etc.

That or the city bid for it and offered to pay to get a huge amount of positive press. Which do you think?

Perhaps trying to see if even poor people would pay $70/mo for a connection that fast? Would be a good test of how well it'd sell.
