Try running the System Restore Wizard in Windows XP to restore your computer to a earlier date.

If you are not sure where this feature is - open your Help And Support Center in XP type in "system restore" in the search box then click on "Run the System Restore Wizard"

With any luck this will work for you :)

Did you do any updates, I had a problem like that after I updated Internet explorer I called Microsoft(XP comes with Three free phone calls to them). The MS guy said you have to shut off your anti virus when downloading and installing updates for xp. I do that and never had a problem since.

time to get a good self booting memory tester, search google for ramtest bootdisk. And set it to run over night repeatedly, if there is a problem it will tell you.

Get Roxio's GoBack 3 Deluxe. It will protect you completely and has much more extensive restoration features than windows own restore.
