Well we are moving to a .pro domain

We will see if the internet has moved on from the almighty .com

wehateporn 11-07-2012 06:58 PM

What are the potential benefits?

Colmike9 11-07-2012 06:59 PM

Good luck..

BlackCrayon 11-07-2012 07:00 PM

hope you have the .com too, otherwise you will lose traffic. no one uses pro.

Nope but I think if you use the .pro in your name then it can stand alone, when we market it will say domain the word dot and pro. It's a short two word domain so it rolls easily.

Hey, well the domain is really easy to remember and the exact terms for our business. Also I think the .pro sounds good and will eventually have some association with professional services. Well I hope so at least! :Oh crap

It's good to try new stuff, as long as you're not risking other stuff that already works well, good luck with the .pro :thumbsup

That's good. As far as SEs, you won't see much of a difference unless the .com that you're currently using is much older than the .pro, in that case stick with the .com if you care about SEO.

CyberHustler 11-07-2012 07:05 PM

Good luck

It's pretty new but we are going to do TV and Radio with this one, so it's more about memory and the image it portrays.

Thanks, the biggest decision factor was we told 30 people the name without asking to remember then after a bunch of other questions and an hour later asked if they remembered it and what it means, they all did remember it easily and said it is a professional web hosting company. yeah still never liked anything other than .com will be interesting to see if it takes.

Were you able to get everything verified with your registrar? .pros used to be almost as hard to get as .edus, but not anymore..

Edit: Just saw how old it is :)
Seems like it could work well with what you're doing :upsidedow

I doubt it.

People will say "dot what?"

potter 11-07-2012 08:00 PM

.pro and you're going to do TV commercials? The media/advertising agency you work with didn't scream "NO" at you?!

.pro and TV commercials, oh that's funny.... WOW

Even when I know it's a different ending, most of the time my hands automatically go to .com when I'm typing. Actually even on some of my own domains.

As soon as the hundreds of new extensions roll out people will get use to alt extensions. You'll be ok. I'm a domainer and been preparing for it for a good while now. Don't try and invest in anything other than .com for selling purposes but you can build on anything.

the only way it will watch on is if the extentions actually get used. if a bunch of investors buy them and don't allow them to be sold, and if the domains sold don't actually get used, no one will even know they exist. even if they did, i think it would take a good 10-15 years for people to get used to them. .com has been engrained in the brain for the past 20.

We did a test with 30 people and they all remembered with no coercing that they should. I was really shocked actually.

Smart, this was the final straw, TLD's will soon be much more flexible and each generation will be more and more used to niche ones. We will definatly see more TLD's that will be relevant per industry. .edu .gov .info .tv .pro ect.. these will someday be almost as popular as .com and the silly .irrelevant ones like .coke will be what we think of .info now.

But the bottom line is 30 people all thought the domain sounded professional and was easy to remember and had no ill feeling to not being a .com. These are not internet business people, just average local business owners and families.
