George Lucas rocks!

As was well represented yesterday here and all over, Lucas sold his production company and the Star Wars franchise to Disney for $4 billion dollars.

Today he said that he is now going to devote his life to giving away most of his wealth to charity focusing heavily on education.

So not only did he create one of the most influential, beloved movie franchises in history, he is now going to give away most of what he gained from doing so.

Sounds like he is a hell of a guy.

:thumbsup very cool!

but maybe he should save some $$$ and refund our money after the loyal Star Wars fans pay to see the garbage Disney makes of the holy Trilogy.. :2 cents:

I wonder if he sold THX too?

You didn't hear? If you are serious (I say this because there were like 10 threads about it the last couple of days on GFY), yes. He sold Lucasfilms to Disney for $4 billion dollars.

I think they did get THX too. I read that Disney gets Star Wars, some share in the Indian Jones trilogy and Industrial Light and Magic, Lucus's special effects company. I sounds like he sold them everything he has in a package deal.

Disney has been making good movies lately. And the recent Star Wars trilogy (sans III) and Indiana Jones were complete garbage. I have more faith in Disney right now.

He's completely done with anything creative? That's rare for a creative person - writers, composers, painters etc usually feel the need to express themselves creatively until their dying days. Maybe he never considered himself to be an 'artist'.

I'd do the same, keep a few hundred million for myself and to pass down to family and friends and the rest figure out how to give it away to people who deserve help. And while anonymous charity is the most virtuous way to give, fuck that, I'd want people to know I gave it to them and receive a pat on the back and a thank you. Possibly sex as well.

I read an interview with Mark Hamill (who played Luke Skywalker) and he said a few weeks ago he met with George Lucas and Lucas told him they were going to make three more Star Wars movies, but he (Lucas) wouldn't be directing them or have much involvement with him. He went on to say that on the sets of the movies Lucas has directed he was constantly miserable because it never comes out exactly how you envision it.

So maybe Lucas will work on a small project, or write, or do something else as a creative outlet without the pressure of making a hit movie or a producing a huge film.

nice to see billionaires doing good..looks like Steve jobs was "the only" billionaire dick who selfishly kept all this wealth to himself..

I was just reading a second article and apparently it gets better. Lucas as been trying for years to build a movie studio sound stage on his property (he owns a lot of land in northern Cali), but his neighbors blocked him from doing it because they didn't want the traffic that kind of thing might bring with it. During a court battle a person speaking on behalf of the neighbors said that anything, including residential housing, would be better. So Lucas is giving in and he is going to build low income housing and housing meant for seniors on fixed incomes on the property.

Yea know Harrison Ford, aka Han Solo was only paid something like $10k for the first Star Wars movie and I'm pretty sure he didn't get royalties.

Granted that movie, for the most part really launched his career but I bet he was a bit bummed at the start when it first started doing well.

Yeah from what I understand on the first Star Wars movie much of the cast, including Ford, were offered either royalties or some money up front. Ford needed the money so he took the cash. Alex Guinness who played Obi-Wan negotiated for 2% of the gross royalties that were paid to Lucas. Lucas got 20% of the box office take so Star Wars made Guinness a very wealthy man.

Of course, Ford went on to do okay for himself. :winkwink:

I thought Return of the Jedi was still a great movie, and finished the Trilogy well.

What did you not like about it? Other than the Ewoks...
