Man I love Austin... random meeting today (13th floor elevators)
So I'm on my way to my favorite coffee place in Austin to meet up with Pearl from Payoneer and after I park my car, this older guy (turns out he is 70) stops me to compliment my "13th Floor Elevators" T-shirt. Then he sees that it's signed by John Ike Walton, their drummer in the mid 1960s and asks me if I know him. Well... I see Roky Erickson play every year at SXSW and John always shows up and I talk to him. Great guy btw. Well it turns out, the guy that I'm now talking to is friends with the band, road tripped with them way back in the day, tripped with them as well LOL and had a few crazy stories to share. Turns out he's also very good friends with one of the original members. Then he tells me about a movie that he's in with them in a scene from like 45 years ago, so I go out and buy the DVD http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1554496/ ... anyway... to those who appreciate obscure music history and randomness of stuff like this... it was way fuckin cool. Very different from all of my random LA meetings.

I love Austin until I get on the 35 and am endlessly perplexed as to why it is only six lane.

Nice! Dead and I are heading to Austin next week to see Leonard Cohen. If you have any suggestions of places not to miss, please do tell. :)

austin is a great place for music. those old hippies are cool. but its still in texas. Good for bible thumpers. Even austin is over run with the religious.
|
Brings back lots of great Austin memories. Though I admit, being asked to leave the Ginger Man for "having too much fun for the other patrons" probably tops my list.
Maybe we should not have gotten those girls to play "Strip Darts".. |

I just moved to Austin myself... exploring it...

To be quite honest, I really don't like Austin. I went to UT, had a great time in college, was there the same 4 years as Ricky Williams so went to some great games, had an internship and worked as an ad assistant at the chronicle senior year and met a lot of non-UT people which was a great experience. Especially for SXSW.
So when combining all that with how the only times I visited after leaving were for SXSW or weddings when everyone was in a festive mood, I had always assumed that i would eventually move back. But when I moved back last year I found it to be boring as fuck. So I came back to the city. |
