Study Linking Aspartame to Cancer Risk Deemed "Weak"

Health nuts rejoice.... :winkwink:

Quote:

Aspartame made headlines this week when a new study found a correlation between drinking diet soda and an increased risk of leukemia, Non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma and other blood-related cancers. However, the Harvard hospital that promoted the research later apologized for bringing increased attention to "weak science."

The research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was originally promoted by Brigham and Women?s Hospital (BWH), a Harvard teaching facility with a press release titled, ?The truth isn?t sweet when it comes to artificial sweeteners.?

But hours before the article went live online the hospital released a new statement.

?Upon review of the findings, the consensus of our scientific leaders is that the data is weak, and that BWH Media Relations was premature in the promotion of this work,? wrote Erin McDonough, senior vice president of communications at BWH.

The Top Breast Cancer Breakthroughs of 2012

Study Investigation and Vague Results

These researchers were following in the footsteps of a long-term 2005 Italian study that found more lymphomas and leukemias in rats fed high doses of aspartame. The FDA and European Food Safety Authority found shortcomings in the study and?because most studies involving animal and humans at the time found no problems with aspartame?said the sweetener was not cause for concern in a 2006 statement.

The new study led by epidemiologist Eva Schernhammer and her team at BWH used records of more than 77,000 women and 47,000 men in the nurses and health professional?s study, one of the largest and longest investigations of factors that influence women?s health.

They concluded the possibility of a detrimental effect of diet soda on select cancers, but their results differed between men and women. They also found a risk for people who drank sugared sodas, saying further studies are needed.

?Epidemiological studies only show association; they never prove cause and effect,? said Dennis Bier, editor of the journal.

He said this paper was accepted in the same manner as every other article that gets published with outside peer reviewers.

?I do think this finding is strong enough to justify further study on aspartame and cancer risk,? said Harvard?s Walter Willet, a co-author of the study and member of the editorial board of the ACJN in an NPR story.

I never know what to believe because it's something new each week.

True. But when we have things like stevia, why take the risk?
Fuck aspartame :)

wehateporn 10-25-2012 11:36 AM

As a general rule do not trust the FDA and CheckBook research. The people who profit from Aspartame will continue to produce fake studies that it's 'perfectly healthy' because Aspartame is their cash cow. They're not going to suddenly admit that it's poison.

The independent research proves conclusively that none of us should be going near Aspartame; it is toxic.

gleem 10-25-2012 11:37 AM

Shit is poison. Ask any pilot they will tell you they all know not to have any diet drinks or gum when flying because it fucks up your vision. They are sure that sugar substitues in general just make you crave sugar even more and people tend to get fatter drinking diet soda, shit's all just a bad idea.

I always say go for the real thing because that's what you want. If you get the fake thing, you will only want more of it, trying to replace your real desire.

One Coke or five Diet Coke's.

Which one is better?

Bryan G 10-25-2012 11:52 AM

I might have one or two diet cokes a week. Pretty sure I'll be ok lol. Regular coke or pepsi is much to sweet.

loreen 11-11-2012 03:07 PM

This is the one I use:

That's bad actually, your body has no way of removing the bad stuff; it keeps building up

wehateporn 11-11-2012 03:11 PM

Wise choice, even better to go for honey :thumbsup

"They also found a risk for people who drank sugared sodas" Basically, artificially sweetened, naturally sweetened there was a risk. Be soda drinking itself is either a risk factor or a lifestyle indicator.
I used to drink one can of Pepsi Max each day at work. I never craved the real thing. When i'm out and about I will order a coke or whatever but try and only drink half.

Penny24Seven 11-11-2012 06:36 PM

I drink 6 cans of pepsi max a day, if it kills anyone it will kill me. Been over a year and still drinking strong. The shit is better then regular pepsi. So I am better off drinking 1800 calories a day or regular pepsi then? VS the zero I get now. Kinda fucked either way

miss_bellabellini 11-11-2012 06:47 PM

Big surprise. Pretty much every peer reviewed scientific study hasn't found anything linking aspartame to cancer or any other serious condition.

But pseudo science groups LOVE to use aspartame as an example of poison and conspiracy. These are the same people who think vaccines cause autism and that homeopathy is the cure for all our problems:/

Stevia is pretty disgusting, or at least an acquired taste.

The only thing you can argue against artificial sweeteners is that consuming sweet things makes you crave more sweet things.

Diet sweet food and drinks are seldom as satisfying as foods with real sugar and other ingredients. So artificial sweeteners might not be as successful when used with diets over the long term.

But if you are addicted to drinking lots of soda on a daily basis then diet soda will definitely be healthier than regular soda.

Try switching to soda water with lemon. It's hard for the first few weeks. But the bubble fills the the soda void after awhile. I like Perrier.

The Aspartame will kill you a lot quicker. Ideally drink water, but definitely stop on the Aspartame; Cancer is a painful death

It's important to always follow the money, you'll find the studies that show Aspartame to be 'safe' are all funded by the people who profit from Aspartame. It's just Checkbook Research, not real research.

Aspartame is Poison!

Aidoru 11-12-2012 12:24 PM

If you just get more active then you won't even want sodas. No one wants a soda after running 3 miles.

I just felt like quoting someone who knows zero about health or dietary needs..

Aspartame has even been cleared to use in moderation for pregnant women.. so much for it being dangerous.. The research was weak 30 years ago, and it is weak today. The shit is harmless, just don't consume a lot of it, just like any other additive.

On single drop is enough to give me a headache. You could lie and tell me it's sugar, I would still get it (happened in the past).
I thought I was weird but many people get them :)

DamianJ 11-13-2012 08:14 AM

How about drinking water when you are thirsty instead of brown sugar water?

Aspartame is Poison!

High fructose corn syrup is worse.

Please share some of this brilliant research about aspartame. I'd love to see the names of the journals publishing the findings. I'm pretty sure the results are correlations, at best. Correlations don't prove causality.

NiXXiN 11-13-2012 02:51 PM

ive been drinking 2ltrs of coke a day for the past 5 or so years. i feel fine and havent had any major problems with my health to date. coke has water in it so its not all bad as people think.

:helpme

That's 220 grams of sugar from the coke alone. Depending on your other food/drinks you are probably well over 300 grams or more a day.
That is insane! Sooner or later you WILL get diabetes. You obviously you no idea how fucking bad this is for your body.
And you have to be really ignorant to think otherwise. 5 years doesn't mean shit. Smoking also doesn't give you lung cancer after 5 years.

Some people...

ETA: the water argument is hilarious.
