BP gets a $10 Billion tax break for the oil spill

Quote:

A portion of that could be refunded from taxes BP paid in earlier years.

The company disclosed its intentions as part of its second-quarter earnings report, in which it said it would record a $32.2 billion charge to reflect the costs of the spill.

You lose money, you pay less taxes. Nothing controversial about that.

Exactly.

I love how that article is worded 'tax payers will *indirectly* foot the bill'.....

Let's say BP disappears overnight and then ALL of the tax they pay is gone - who is to blame then?

They should have been fined 10 billion more dollars.

Tom_PM 10-24-2012 01:22 PM

They should be required to drill a relief well for every well drilled in the gulf. That's on them to do, and it's in the public's interest as well. Simple requirement to drill there by one stroke of the pen. Nobody cares enough.

Nothing new. Donate money get a tax break. Spend money, get a tax break.

Cost of doing business.

PornoMonster 10-24-2012 01:29 PM

Holly Shit, Now Tax Breaks are OK? But when Mitt uses them it's bad?

Listen BOTH SIDES DO THE EXACT SAME THING. The Only Difference is what GROUPS they Give or Spend your Money on!!!!!

It was scary for sure...but my brother is a fishing captain in the gulf.

It's not fucked up anymore. Like it or not...the Gulf is back to normal. Nature seems to be able to repair most every dumbass thing we do to it.

The Oil Spill was an example of what's known as 'Crisis Capitalism'

3 weeks before the spill the George Bush/Dick Cheney 9-11-linked Halliburton company negotiated the purchase of the world's largest oil-spill cleanup firm (Boots & Coots) at the exact time keen observers on Wall Street--financial intelligence agents at Goldman Sachs unloaded 44% of their stock in BP

i don't know.

i just feel that, in our current financial situation as a country why do we need to give these guys a 10 billion dollar tax break. nobody is going to step up to the plate and act responsibly ever ... just run it right into the ground and clean up the mess. make sense ? probably not :helpme anyway, fuck it. if anything it's pretty interesting

Robbie 10-24-2012 04:18 PM

Just keep in mind that the federal govt. spent 10.6 billion dollars in the last 24 hours. And they will spend another 10.6 billion dollars in the next 24 hours.

And you guys are worried about some oil company?

The real insanity is in Washington D.C.

Titan 10-24-2012 06:03 PM

It's not a tax break. Don't be retarded. If you have 100 billion dollars in gross revenue and then you have 100 billion dollars in expenses you pay NO taxes. When this happens do you say that the company ripped off the government for 35 billion in taxes? No, because they didn't make any fucking money. This is basic accounting 101. Sure BP saved $10 billion taxes but they also had to pay $30 billion in clean up costs. Trust me they rather would have paid the extra taxes because that means they made more money.

What caused the expense ?

yeah, my family lives on the gulf and my brother is a fishing captain.

I was swimming in Panama City a year ago. Absolutely gorgeous. And I eat seafood every chance I get.

I don't think the damage was long lasting. That's all I'm saying.

I agree with you. I was just kinda surprised at how quickly nature sort of fixed itself there. When the thing was happening I was one of those people who was scared it was going to destroy the entire ocean around the world.

I wonder if oil leaks ever happen naturally underwater? Like if there's an underwater earthquake or something?

When all that happened I kinda wondered about that and if nature is already adapted to it for the long term? I'm not saying I think that...I'm just saying it crossed my mind.

tony286 10-24-2012 08:10 PM

If u read the article it looks like it's the expense they wrote off and I guess that's common. And they talk about 35 percent Corp tax. It's like a urban legend lol.

epitome 10-24-2012 11:39 PM

They should have had their Caribbean entity invoice their US entity for "management fees" so they could get more back.

Paul Markham 10-25-2012 01:22 AM

Look into why the oil rigs are so badly controlled and you see the reasons it happened.

Will Romney decide this is a good area to cut spending?
