Premade Gallery Templates
 

Ok, I have a need and thought I would throw this idea out there for someone who may want to fill the need. It's gallery templates.

I purchase a lot of custom made gallery templates from various designers. I'm always needing templates but I'm a compulsive person. I decide my current templates don't fit the bill and I want a new one NOW. But currently that's not possible. I have to contact the designer, get him some content and wait (and wait and wait).

What I would like is a site (or sites) to shop for gallery templates. Sort of like shopping for content. The templates are premade and preferably you can buy them exclusively. I want INSTANT download. A click to the shopping cart, off to paypal, and Voila! the template is mine.

Yes, I know there are content license problems with doing this but I offer two solutions: 1) no photos - I don't have to have a naked girl in the template, they'll be enough in the photos that I add to the template or 2) make the template design to promote a specific sponsor/site and use sponsor content.

Also these templates should follow standard TGP etiquette ... 15 to 18 pics, good size thumbnails (I like 112x150, and might I add the thumbnail size needs to be resizable from 768x1024, I don't want to have to crop every picture) and most importantly of all visually pleasing.

There is such service already.. and I will be having ready made gallery templates up on my site if I ever have the time to complete all my current custom designs first... but for now it's the other guys site.. don't remember the url... galleryskins.com maybe?

I agree completely Roxanne and have been asking for the same type service for awhile now. I think GallerySkins.com will become such a place soon.

I don't think so. Voodoo makes them from scratch. I already own most of the ones in his portfolio. :)

FlashFreak: Do you have any premade gallery templates for sale on an exclusive basis? That's actually the topic of this discussion. I'm not asking for a designer to design gallery templates but for templates that have ALREADY been designed and they are for sale.

And regarding the "webmasters stole them" problem: it's a shame that this is actually an issue. But if you're a designer, I'm sure it's a very real one. My solution would to be take a screenshot of the gallery and shrink it down to a nice size thumbnail pic. This way potential buyers could see what they are buying but the source and the pics aren't in the page. Maybe also list the specifics of the gallery in text, such as, 16-112x150 thumbs, 2 clickable links ... etc.

I don't know about other people. But what I will do when I don't have orders in line.. is to make ready galleries for different sponsors.. and just sell them as they are, once. So there wouldn't be many copies of the same gallery going around.

Gothweb: I completely agree. That's why I said preferably on an exclusive basis. But I'm sure there are some people, probably newer to the biz, that would be interested in purchasing a really nice template for cheap and wouldn't mind others having it also. So I would assume both markets are out their for the designers.

But personally, I would only consider exclusive gallery templates also.

Heh, it'll be a while before I clear all the designs ppl have ordered first.. I might get more orders in before these are done.. so if you're not in luck the galleries will be done around july.

This sounds like a cool idea. Is it easy to setup a system with paypal to give download access to certain files after the payment?

I'm not sure about easy but I'm pretty sure it can be done. Anyone know for sure?

My feeling is you should start with the larger sponsors so you have a wider appeal to begin with. My personal favorites would be Silvercash, Nasty Dollars, CE Cash, Lightspeed Cash, Ox Cash. But there are so many out there. See which galleries get snapped up first and which sit. It will probably be a bit of trial and error.

What is the deal with the content that is used in the templates? Do I need to get a separate license for the content or is it sold as part of the templates?

Content is not included with the gallery templates, fill in the blanks with your own pics.

Just want to get this straight ... I realize the content isn't included for the gallery templates (ie thumbnails and big pics) but I was talking about the content used as design elements for the templates. How does that work?

First: I'd be interested in buying of-the-shelf templates myself, if the price is right and the lay-out works o.k. (eg. fits into a 800x600 screen, no re-cropping of thumbs needed, etc.), because I spend far too much time on my own templates...

I guess the ©-right issue is easily solved if you're using sponsor content for the design, and in most cases there's enough of it to find something suitable.

Hint to sponsors: release a few neutral-background images and header graphics to be used in templates - I find it very tedious to have to cut the logo of a site from a tour page with fading or overlapping background images!

I think this is defeating the purpose of a gallery template to a certain extent...in my opinion, a gallery template is purchased to

a. Get a design that stands out from the rest.

b. Match and target the traffic coming through that gallery to the sponsor it promotes

c. Achieve higher ctr/conversions than your average template.

Snagging from a big pool would negate all three purposes...I think in the end you pay more in the sense that you're paying to serve graphics now that are going to be unproductive, plus you paid for the template...

In the end if multiple people buy the same template...you've basically achieved nothing...

I'm not knocking the whole idea, but it seems self defeating.

The whole idea, I thought, of a custom gallery template was to match it up with a tour...to achieve a sort of continuity in the transfer from gallery to tour...but hey...that's just the way I do it i guess...

Hoax: You're point is completely valid and I totally agree. That's why I started this discussion centering on exclusive gallery templates.

But in regards to the templates at sexplanet: the cost is so inexpensive that it would be affordable to get a membership and pick out the "gems" (if there are any). One "gem" a month would more than cover the cost of the membership.

But yes, I'm mostly interested in exclusive premade templates that the designer took the time to match the message with the sites it's promoting. Even willing to pay a premium over and above what a custom gallery template costs because the designer took the time to make it before it was sold he should reap an extra reward. :thumbsup

And designers, don't contact me saying you will premake templates for me. That's not what this discussion is about. It's about a site (or sites) dedicated to it. Not just for me but for all webmasters. Instead of making them for me, make a site and list them so everyone can see and be able to purchase them! :)

I was kinda too lazy to check with sponsors' TOS pages, but while I do believe that they wouldn't mind someone making the galleries for their sites (it's in their interest) and getting a few bucks in return, isn't it possible that it's against their free content policy? I don't wanna get screwed legally and lose my account for being careless :)

Good point. I wasn't saying sell the galleries with big pics and thumbs. That doesn't interest me.

I was saying you could possibly use the the sponsor's content for design elements within the template. But you're correct, any designer doing this should check with the sponsor first and make sure it's within the sponsors free content usage policy. Personally, I don't have a problem with the template not having any content in its design elements. As long as the template is visually pleasing and the message is tailored for the site it's promoting. I, of course, will add the nude girls to the template by way of thumbs. :Graucho

To reiterate what Roxane said, for me anyway, content per say itself is not needed for the galleries in question..just maybe content from the sponsors in question for design purposes if needed is.
I buy premium designed galleries, but for me this would be for those times I have no time to fart around with them...There are times I'd like to go to a sote, check out what's available in terms of premade templates, buy it, dl and I'm on my way..
