do you fnd this attractive or sick?
Damien Hirst's giant bronze statue of a pregnant woman
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-lnwE6iLP3...gin_mother.jpg The artistic merit of Damien Hirst's giant bronze statue of a pregnant woman has split opinions in Ilfracombe, but it also raises the issue of the role of public art in regenerating a town. She has been called outrageous, immoral, bizarre, obscene, offensive, disgusting, grotesque, a monstrosity, of no artistic merit and demeaning to women. Others see her as beautiful and unique, with the power to transform a town's tired image and boost its economy. This week Damien Hirst's 20.25m (66ft) bronze artwork - known as Verity - is being installed in the Devon seaside town of Ilfracombe. The artwork is on 20-year loan from controversial artist Hirst, who lives locally and owns a restaurant in the town. The naked pregnant figure stands looking out from Ilfracombe Harbour, sword held aloft, with part of her anatomy exposed - a baby visible in the womb. The decision by North Devon Council to grant the statue planning permission follows months of vigorous debate by both the "yes" and "no" camps. "We need to have a second string to our bow," says Ilfracombe councillor Mike Edmunds, who can see the new arrival from his bedroom window. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19881524 |

Does it have to be attractive or sick? I think it is a statue...
I find it interestingly disturbing :1orglaugh
everyone will have an opinion about it and voice their opinion... that makes it effective in my opinion.
to echo previous statements, it is interesting |
Really cook and dare we say educational?
I think it's pretty cool
I think the problem is that its not being put in say a big town, but in a pretty seaside village.
the best interview from a lady was that she said there were enough pregnent women there all ready. that made me giggle. |
I can't fap to this
With all due respect, I think it is sort of strange to address art as "attractive or sick". For me this was "live from beginning to end". Full of contradictions.
As always I saw something that wasn't there. It is called "the virgin mother". Quote> Hirst explains the significance of the reference to Degas: “It is kind of naughty; she shouldn't really be pregnant. I wanted a feeling of that. Anyone who is pregnant looks old enough, that's the problem.” < Quote |
The better question would simply be, why ??
neither, it's a bit unusual, but probably more appropriate in some museum or medical school...

You are FULL OF SHIT, Asshole. |
Opinions are split.. I get it. Good one. Well done. Pat on the back.
It seems to be a fine statue with a statement and all that. Better off in a museum possibly but I wouldn't mind if I walked past it twice a day. It's a lot more thoughtful than some guy on a horse for instance. |
I think there will be twins.
It will be famous for a little while. Wait for the pigeons to add to it and it will look like the eye sore it is.
Neither :pimp
Art is intended to evoke an emotion and it seems to have done so "well done mr hurst"
That is awesome!
Would have been better if he hadn?t cut her fingers off
Art is to create emotion. It obviously worked.
I would love to see that in front of a university, medical school or hospital. |
Reminds us of the horrors of pregnancy ...
Interesting, educational, intriguing. Wouldn't want it in my garden but that's art for ya, it's the definition of subjective.
It would capture my attention...
Really cool!
Very creative and interesting!

Of all the Hirst pieces out there, I like this the best. However, I much prefer a KAWS Dissected companion to it for a fraction of the price: http://i.imgur.com/pnP90.jpg :thumbsup |
