What was the story exactly?

Had a kid with a brain tumor. Said he needed treatment in the US because he wasn't getting the proper treatment in Canada, so this was going to cost him thousands. Turns out he just ended up getting treated in Canada for free and the kid was fine. So he and his wife just stopped working for a while and lived off the donations and even splurged for a plasma tv, which was still an expensive item back then. Could be wrong but I think he made between 20 and 30 k. Don't remember all the details.
