Do you have a homemade dog food recipe?

I really don’t like feeding my dog dry dog food which he makes no qualms as to his feelings about that meal and in my opinion understandingly so.

I’ve tried a few of the canned dog foods; my latest being Newman’s Own organic chicken and brown rice but I really don’t think it provides him with all the daily nutrients he needs,

My dog trainer told me to give my dog half a raw chicken carcus

I have a 90lb Staffordshire and I just scoop a portion of whatever I make for dinner in with a little bit of the dry food. He loves it, and it doesn't take much effort to make a little more for my pet.

Also combinations of Rice, Eggs, Chicken meat, & Veggies make great doggie meals.


I do avoid giving him any ingradients bad for dogs
Large amounts of Onions, Garlic, Chives, Milk, Salt, Bread and NO Grapes & Raisins, Macadamia Nuts, Avocado, Chocolate, Coffee, Caffeine

I hope you deworm and take him to the vet regularly... There are parasites in human food that dogs simply cannot digest like we do (kill).

Cow hearts are great. Cardiac muscle is v good for the dog's health.

Raw meat... seriously.

I take him to the vet regularly, no signs of parasites. I eat pretty clean, mostly gluten & dairy free which are the two major culprits dog stomach trouble. Well cooked meat to kill any parasites. I forgot to include I don't feed him fish.

I have bred GSDs and Rottweilers for many years, and dry "kibble" is a nessessary part of their diets - preventing tooth decay - unless you are going to physically brush your dog's teeth daily??

If you want to add something to his dry kibble (spend the couple bucks for a reputable brand like Hills Science Diet or Eukanuba), then go ask your local butcher for some tripe ... it is good for him, and he will love it!
Tripe is a treat - not a diet mainstay. I only give 1 cup a day to a 90 pound dog ...

Just be prepared also, that as you put anything "extra" through your dog's digestive system (including wet/canned foods, tripe or meat, or home-made dog foods), it is going to make man's best friend MUCH MORE FLATULENT!!!

There is pretty good dry food. Nonetheless I often give eggs with an apple (they like it lol) and sometime some cooked meat or fish mixed with the dry food. I have 2 labs.

I have an old dog that I feed a mixture of dry food with homemade filler. I boil chicken breasts then add to that broth, beans and carrots. I then freeze it in small tupperware to mix with her dry food each day after I warm it up.

Some really good recipe’s and advice and I appreciate everyone of them but
I think I’ll give this a try.


I also should have mentioned that he does let me brush his teeth.

Oh and I also do like cats very much, I may even get him a kitten for playmate, I'm sure he would love it.

Tip, Make sure the water you use to boil the chicken isn't to much or it will be weak when you put the veggies in to cook and get flavor. I cook the chicken first, then remove and cut it while the veggies cook in the broth then add back the chicken for a little bit. Hope your dog enjoys it!

A dog does not give a shit about expensive chicken breast. Give him cheap meat. They love tripe. Mix the tripe with some dry dog food and maybe some bread or rice. If it's too dry add a little bit of warm water. Yum yum. Your dog will love you.

A 15 pound bag has 12 pounds of chicken in it. My Lab loves that shit, and he's strong as an ox and thriving on it.

I feed my dog kibbles mixed with raw burger or a slice of 'dog food loaf' the raw burger really turned it around for him... more focused attention and more energy. I give him marrow bones as well...

One of my dogs shits at night on the porch and the other one eats it up, is that considered "homemade" ?

We used to give our Dobe a good kibble mixed with Ground Offal meats from the butcher (Heart, lung, kidney, tripe etc) it used to stink, but he loved it. Got frozen blocks that we thawed daily for the next day. He also used to get scraps of meat, and veggies, and rice.

when i rescued my dog nearly 3 years ago i found out within months that she had a small bladder stone. vets wanted 4k to do surgery and remove it. i searched the web for hours to find out if there were any natural means of eliminating it. there was a dog food vets sell by rx for it but no guarantee. i found tons of entries about a site called pawhealer.com and ordered the herbs for her to see if they would dissolve it. i emailed asking about the diet as it needed to be low protein for a few months (the vet food is zero protein for 3 months which is very unhealthy and can kill a dog longer than that). the owner told me no grains and i had already been doing brown rice. so here is what i did and my dog never looked better:

boil a whole chicken and shred off
steam a basket of green beans and chop in food processor
steam a basket of small yellow and or green squash and chop in food processor
boil and mash a bag of red potatos (she hated idaho/brown)
steam a basket of carrots and chop in food processor
steam and chop 1 celery stalk and 1 garlic clove
sometimes steam a bundle of spinach

i mixed all together and she had food for nearly a week. i would keep 3 days in fridge and freeze the rest. if she wasn't sick i would double the chicken at least. i learned that she wouldnt eat the green beans or carrots unless they were chopped but most dogs will. her coat was so shiny and she went to the bathroom effortlessly if ya know what i mean. the stone was gone from her ultrasound 6 months later and eventually i switched back to a regular food because it is a lot of work. i do feel guilty but still make her fresh food a couple times a week. she likes chicken livers (cooked) and once a week i buy her either cubed stew meat and feed it raw (very cheap) or get her a beef rib bone to chew on raw.
my dog does not drink tap water when at home, i wouldnt give that to my worst enemy. she gets the filtered water from the fridge.

fresh food is a big commitment but well worth it. do some research about grains vs no grains. i think it depends on individual health issues. good luck!

dam thats alot for bladder stones. I had some removed and it cost me about 10%

When I was a kid we lived in South Africa. My step father bred Great Danes. He had a ranch out on the veld near Johannesburg and he simply pulled a half of a horse out into a field every couple of days and the dogs (between 40 and 50 of them), simply fed on that. Their favorite thing to eat was the entrails on the second day.


Super healthy, happy, shining dogs, and aside from de-worming regularly, no health issues.



He used to tell me that pet food was originally very smelly entrails in cans, but the manufacturers changed the odor, and added veggies.... Not for the pets, but for the owners.

Even in humans, if one can deter gall bladder removal surgery, it's best to go the diet-route. I may have to resort to the surgery route though as they may be too large to pass naturally.
