Uh oh, my buddy is thinking of popping the Q!

He asked me my feelings on it and I support him on it. She's a super cool girl. He said he has no idea where to start in terms of diamonds. I said heck if I know! He doesn't have a lot of money but was looking for something between a 1 and 1.3 I guess in something called an "H" or something. Any thoughts of what the cost of this would be? I told him I have no idea. Do I look like a jeweler?

I'm guessing something between 6-9k depending on the set but I don't have a clue. Any ideas so I can look smart when he asks again tomorrow? LOL

B.Barnato 10-09-2012 08:44 PM

What happened to dragging the girl of your dreams into your cave and impregnating her?

Much more romantic.

Tell him to pop the question if he likes to but go for a super simple wedding. No newlywed needs to start their lives together in debt.

Colmike9 10-09-2012 09:09 PM

Lustour is a good diamond substitute that is suitable for engagement rings if he's looking to save some money. :upsidedow

I was given one for making a website for a Lustour dealer and they're nice.

One thing I've noticed is that the more people spend on the ring and a fancy wedding the quicker the divorce comes.

Well mine should last for a 10000 years then

BlackCrayon 10-10-2012 05:07 AM

marriage is one of the biggest fuck jobs for men. the women get all the advantages.

keysync 10-10-2012 05:32 AM

All women are super cool when they think they're about to get $10,000 spent on them.

They're not so cool when you have a couple kids, mortgage is due and you have $60 in your checking acct.

Ross 10-10-2012 06:30 AM

$6-9k will get him a nice ring roughly 1 ct and other good metrics like an E or F colour, nice clarity and cut. If he wants 1.3 the price will rise steeply. I tried to get my fiancee a 1.5 in all the metrics I choose and the price was double. In the end I'd rather have a bit smaller diamond that sparkles like hell and is perfect than get a big diamond that isn't the nicest in all the other metrics. My girl was over the moon with hers.

L-Pink 10-10-2012 06:37 AM

Wonder what my ex-wifes did with their rings? Oh well …..

.

ilnjscb 10-10-2012 06:39 AM

I don't know you, so I'm sorry if this is intrusive, but tell him not to get married if he lives in America or Canada. You, as his friend, will not want to see the wreck of a person he'll be after his divorce. I've seen a number of happy confident people reduced to near suicidal shells of human beings. Every man says "I'm different". None are.

Django 10-10-2012 06:42 AM

What a coincidence

slapass 10-10-2012 07:35 AM

Size matters. The clarity, grade, color or any other dumb ass thing they try to sell him is BS. I know every jeweler in the world will disagree. BUT she shows it to her friends, mom, etc. They won't know shit and it will look bigger for the same price. Win.

Then it goes to her in a divorce so any true "investment grade" shit that he didn't buy doesn't matter so why pay extra now? Win.

If you need a magnifying glass to see the difference then don't pay for that difference. Seems pretty clear.

Quoted to show that bigger crappier diamonds are cheaper then small decent ones. Supporting my post.

Good advice

Climb a ladder to her window at night unexpectedly. If she'll elope to vegas and get married then there's a chance it'll work out. Same thing with the jewelry unless 10k is carrying around money to him.

Taken for granted? Diamonds aren't rare at all, the entire business is a huge marketing scam. You might as well go dig up a fucking pebble in your backyard and have it set into a ring, it would be no more common than a diamond. The only reason they're as expensive as they are is because of companies like De Beers having a near monopoly on diamond mining and manipulating the market, fixing prices, and engaging in all kinds of other exploitative and borderline criminal practices. At least with the pebble in your backyard you won't have to live with the moral burden of knowing that your wife's rock was mined by some eight-year-old Sierra Leonean slave kid put to work by some African warlord in the diamond mines after his family was beaten, tortured, and driven off their land. Of course, most women are vapid cunts who don't give a shit who suffers and dies for their sparkly accoutrements, so I don't think that argument is gonna work.

found this on yahoo:

What is suggested for the engagement ring is 5 percent salary

So if you make 20,000 consider spending 1000
30,000= 1500
40,000 = 2000
50,000 = 2500
60,000 = 3000
70,000 = 3500
80,000 = 4000
100,000= 5000

one thing i liked that my dad did is he asked my grandmother what to get my mom. She said not to get the ring or if so just to get the band and tell her that you will go let her pick her own ring so you know you get something she will like.

For those very reasons my fiancee put me on notice long ago that she'd fucking throttle me if I ever bought her a diamond.

As for diamonds being "rare," oh no's.. what now?? Looks like the Rothschild international diamond cartel might be fucked.

I've collected and delt in diamonds for over 10 years. For 7K I could make a ring that would get her robbed at gun point no less then once a week LOL. Don't let him go buy it from some store. My girl sports about 15 carats of diamonds but if they were bought at a store it would be ten times as much money

I'll think about it.

I don't wear earrings, though; earrings are for women, pirates, and faggots. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. If you see a supposedly straight guy wearing earrings, unless he's a pirate, he's probably thinking about sucking a dick. Just something to keep in mind.

I'm not mad, I'm just being hyperbolic. My cynicism manifests itself in many forms, one being misogyny. But, really, how many people, when they go to buy a diamond ring, give a shit where it comes from? They don't care; they don't even want to know.

agree about the vapid cunts remark. But didn't know they aren't rare at all, interesting. Btw I mean taken for granted in a way that it's starting to become normal to spend almost 10k on a wedding ring. My dad made his ring himself when he used to work at a metal company. Cost him $0 and never divorced.

Buy the rough diamonds yourself and take them thru the whole process to finish jewelry, or what? :)

I believe the traditional etiquette is to keep the ring if you got married and it does not work out. But the woman has to give the ring back if she breaks off the engagement.

I never really got the whole diamond ring thing, in a post-dowry world, but I know a lot of chicks dig 'em.

RKLover 10-12-2012 11:05 AM

Tell him to just buy her a house. She'll get it in the divorce anyway. Made my first ex pretty happy with a house instead of a ring and big wedding.

J. Falcon 10-12-2012 11:13 AM

beks001 10-12-2012 11:15 AM

Wow some negative ppl here that probably arent happy with thier marriages from the sounds of some posts! Ouch! I told him, long story short....dont go broke over the ring. Go with your gut and heart. If she truly is about you and not possessions then it wont matter what the ring is.

Django 10-12-2012 11:26 AM

trillion are there?

Jon 10-12-2012 11:30 AM

I've got nearly one thousand total carats in investment stones. Most are rough (uncut and unpolished). Could always offload one to you/your friend. They are all gem quality. Most are premiums which I wouldn't sell or give up just yet.

However, marriage alone is not such a great ROI in general. But, even so, if he wants to do it, goodluck to him for sure. As for a ring, its very easy. Buy something with more sparkle. Girls love sparkling rings. So your friend's best bet here is to buy the lower grade, smaller carat stones, just pack them all in there, don't even bother with a larger carat primary stone surrounded by lesser carat stones. That's just going to eat a hole in his pocket. Also, jam pack it with insurance, but GET IT APPRAISED every 6-12 months. This way it becomes an investment diamond and not just "a ring of loooove".

As for what people say here, about them not being rare. That's not entirely true. Are diamonds themselves, as a standard stone rare? No. Are gem quality diamonds rare? Yes and no. The fact that mining operations can extract them faster I guess makes them not so rare. But then again, its a very controlled market. I don't want to get too deep into this topic on here, but let's just say that gem quality Rubies are far more rare than any white natural gem quality diamonds.

I keep saying gem quality because the majority of diamonds that are produced/mined/extracted, are used for industrial and commercial applications. They don't end up on rings or necklaces or up anyone's ass for smuggling or bank account boxes for investments.

....and the Rothschild firm doesn't own De Beers. Anglo American plc does. Yes, its true, Rothschild firm did finance it, and still retain a stake in it, but they are not the absolute owners. The Oppenheimer firm/family owned the majority for a very long time. But now, its actually majority owned by AAC, with the Botswana gov owning something like 15%. I know its less than 20%. AAC is a mining global conglomerate. So just wanted to set it straight before you start blaming Jews for everything. It pays to know what the fuck you're talking about first before you start in on it.

Of course, from a moral or even ethical stand point, that debate will rage on forever. The way I see it.. I can care less if they are rare or not. But the rest of the world, specifically the buyers and most women out there don't give a flying fuck if its real or not. So long as it sparkles and looks great and fancy, then the guys will keep buying them up, furthermore elevating the market value of my diamonds so I can keep flipping them and taking in healthy profits.

Choose your battles I guess.
