Smith & Wesson Has New Revolver

Anyone have this bad boy yet?

"SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Dirty Harry is now outgunned: Smith & Wesson has introduced it's biggest handgun ever, a .50 caliber Magnum.

The five-shot revolver with an 8 1/2 inch barrel weighs about 5 pounds - roughly a pound more than the big black .44 Magnum wielded by Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry movies. It fires a .50-caliber cartridge the company said produces nearly three times the muzzle energy of the .44 -- or enough stopping power to bring down a charging bear.

The gun, which sells for $989, is one of nine new models introduced by Smith & Wesson this week at a trade show in Orlando, Fla."

You're right. The price tag is a bit on the heavy side. But just think of all the money you'd save in ammo.

One shot from this gun is enough to do as much damage as a whole clip of 9mm slugs.

I've got a .40 S&W automatic and the recoil is like a .38 revolver. It blows BIG holes. My tiny little hands don't have a problem with the slide and though it's loud, when you squeeze one off you can barely feel a thing.

I can't wait to get me one of the .50 S&W, someone will probably have one at a gun show around here before long.... right after the Desert Eagle I want. The only nice thing about the Bible Belt is unrestricted gun buying, lol. They don't even keep permanant records around here about gun ownership. The 5 day waiting period doesn't often apply around here, all you have to do is get the sheriff to sign your paperwork and you can walk away with your gun that day.

Backov 02-15-2003 11:59 AM

Ya know, the funny thing is that they used to make revolvers that big. It's only recently that they've gotten this big again.

I'm not a gun history guy by any means, but a gun-nut friend of mine had an old 1800s or something revolver that loaded and fired rifle bullets.

And if you remember True Grit? - the chick in that piece had the "big ole horse gun", that was the deal.. This massive fucking revolver that fired rifle bullets and kicked like a horse.

Sweet looking gun. My penis feels bigger just looking at it.

Cheers,
Backov

Are you serious? All you need is for your sheriff to sign the papers? I guess in a small town I can see the point that he would know you for a long time and shit, and know of your record, etc. But how would he know your mood that day? Hehe.

(scroll down)

I've seen the .50 AE bullets before, but .454 casull round was longer.

This .500 s&w round is crazy huge. I doubt it would be much fun to target fire, unles all you did was fire it once. Cool stuff.

That gun is completly weak. It's a hollywood show gun, and totally impractical. It's the revolver equiv of the DE .50. If you want to see the best handgun and CQB guns in existence today:

<img src="http://www.airsoftextreme.com/images/games/P90%20and%20Five-Seven.jpg">

I have that replica of the top one on my wall in my office at home.
The entire caliber is illegal to US citizens. The pistol holds 20 armor piercing rounds, the P90 holds 50.

Until I can own those, I'll settle for my .40 Glock's.

SureFire 02-15-2003 08:29 PM

S&W trying to make a come back from lost sales due partially to boycott, released some new models recently. The .50 mag was meant to hunt bears and such?it?s a hand cannon not a revolver. Recoil should exceed .454 casuul(sp). It?s a niche gun. Liberal media concerned about gang bangers using it against police should note the price and the lack of concealed carry. A rifle/shotgun is still a better bet, and I won?t buy from a company that is a 2nd amendment bigot.

Oh, I will buy used S&W guns pre-sellout. Plus it is really ugly. Maybe, Clint will come back and do another Dirty Harry movie using this gun?

:)

Do you really think it's ugly? Wow. I think it's sexy. Throwback to the old western days and vintage "hollywood" type weapons. That's what I like about it.

Will gangbangers use it? Nah. Not because it's expensive (gang members don't buy their guns legally anyway), and not because it's hard to conceal (still smaller than a sawed-off shotgun), but because it's only 5 shots, and gangbangers like to cap off rounds from an automatic just to hear them go off.

Will it still take a man's head clean off? Well, punk... you feeling lucky? :Graucho

SureFire 02-16-2003 07:19 PM

One of favorite quotes from Harry Callahan (Dirty Harry):

"I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a 44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clear off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?"

Now Clint really has to make another Dirty Harry movie!

Still think it is ugly, and it does make my SP101 that shoots five also kind of whimpy. I admit, I wouldn't mind having one but saving my pennies for S&W 625 2" barrel a.k.a. John Bobbit revolver also a new S&W offering.
