Own your own SUPERCOMPUTER for only $99?

A kickstarter projects aims to make $99 supercomputers (parallel computing) available to the general public. Sheer genius? Undiscovered bonanza? Or crackhead tech dreams?

That will be nice for rendering

Turboface 10-01-2012 10:24 PM

That's just a press release type 'news story' that means absolutely nothing.

...Chipmaker Adapteva wants to make parallel computing (or supercomputing) available to everyone...

:winkwink:

My money's on crackhead tech dreams.

Unless the projected time of completion is at least 20 years ahead.

msk19994 10-02-2012 12:10 AM

If that goes through then that would be awesome

sandman! 10-02-2012 12:23 AM

bunch of dumbasses@!

seeandsee 10-02-2012 01:45 AM

25GHZ, that would be great for everything

If you look at the site, they say 99 will get you delivery of the device in may, and 499 will give you delivery in feb... the computer is already in prototype stage, Might be fun to just toss 99 bucks at it just to play with one. If nothing else, it would make a good NAS Or considering it's size build a your entertainment system around it.

I've been running my whole house on a mac mini since 2004, recently moved it to become a central nas, and replaced the unit on the tv with the ATV3 (waiting on jB) but it would be nice to have something with more power and options.

Going to at least keep an eye on it.

But putting it on kickstarter?

Anyway, there's a massive hurdle to doing this cheaply. Using cheap gateway chips.

One thing that I DO LIKE about this project is that they are using an OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE strategy. Pretty nifty if you ask me.

Rochard 10-02-2012 04:37 PM

45ghz... That's insane.

bronco67 10-02-2012 04:46 PM

45ghz....ok.

But will it run Windows OS and current software?

Concerning how crappy WinBlows is... it will probably manage to HANG a 45ghz box :1orglaugh

mikesouth 10-02-2012 04:54 PM

Windows couldnt possibly scale that far bet your ass it run a UNIX based OS

I am with theo though that would be a very capable system for rendering and other cpu intense stuff

could make one helluva server too

mikesouth 10-02-2012 05:31 PM

just think buy ten of em and connect em with some sort of fiber channel or something to parallel them....wow
