"TOKYO ? Coastguard vessels from Japan and Taiwan duelled with water cannon Tuesday after dozens of Taiwanese boats escorted by patrol ships sailed into waters around Tokyo-controlled islands.

Japanese coastguard ships sprayed water at the fishing vessels, footage on national broadcaster NHK showed, with the Taiwanese patrol boats directing their own high-pressure hoses at the Japanese ships.

The large-scale breach of what Japan considers sovereign territory ? one of the biggest since WWII ? is the latest escalation in a row over ownership of the islands that pits Tokyo against Beijing and Taipei."

Right now it's coast guard ships and water cannons... What happens when this becomes a real shooting war? Will China bitch smack Japan? Will The US be required to step in under some treaty?

Japan is not part of NATO last time I checked, they were just "partners". So no we aren't required to defend. Japan has a good navy though and good luck to them :thumbsup

Under an agreement made at the end of WW2, US will have to step in. What US news is really not focusing on are the insane amount of resources found off the islands, all the way up to the disputed islands with Russia. This is all relatively new news.

US will definitely and with great force assist Japan as US wants to partner with Japan to drill for the riches. The sovereignty issue is more diplomatic cover than anything else.

Japan has technology for the drilling. Does not have manpower resources. What we are seeing is China and US fighting over partner status. Taipei just wants a taste. You know, lil bit.
Most Americans, most westerners for that matter are only exposed to "Mass-Gomi" - What Japanese call the bought and paid for media groups, like FUJI TV, within Japan. Usually very pro Korea or China. Real Japanese are ready and willing to do whatever it takes to keep the islands, the resources and get rid of the "Mass-Gomi."
