Any other serious RVers here?
Camp very often in tents once a week on average. I also have a large pop up trailer and a small class C RV than can tow my car.
Considering a year or so in national parks out west but need reliable internet via satilite and expect to have to generate my own power via solar to stay green. Anyone do this yet? Open to suggestions... |
Yeah, National Parks can be a pain that way; but hey, they may not be open too much longer anyway. They'll get hit in a budget cut.

My almost in-laws are fulltime RV'ers. They both retired at age 55 and have rented out their home in SoCal and now just spend the summer in NorCal where it is cool, and the winter in Phoenix where it is warm, and they go to various places for spring and fall.
They use HughesNet satellite for internet access while in the mountains in NorCal but it is pretty slow and not very reliable. In Phoenix, they use a local broadband wifi provider, and they have a mobile hotspot for other places. As far as power goes, most RV hookups provide power, water, and sewage hookups. For places that dont (like the upcoming balloon festival in Albequerque) they have a pair of those really quiet Honda generators, plus their refrigerator can run on propane or electricity. Same with their hot water heater. |

Problem in campsites are trees etc that may block the view. I assume if that is the case I need to drive to a spot that has a clear shot and work from there and the drive back to the camping spot. That will only work is one of those "auto aligning antennas" work well. As for power, generators won't work for me (though I have one) as the venture will be billed as a "mobile green office" as all equipment to run the business side has to be carbon neutral. Baddog, Parks closing? Distinct possibility for some as well as major service cut backs. Let's just say that there are some that will always be able to LEGALLY access even parks that are closed to the public with DOI blessings (which I have done already) and leave it as that. This would be a continuation of an ongoing nonprofit mainstream I started more than 7 years ago. |
Thats the great thing about "our" job. Where ever you can sit your ass down and get 12 volts and a 3g signal.. you can work and earn. I spent a few months doign something simular to you. I was toying with buying a 3g booster/repeater/amplfyer as I heard good success from folks on the UK canal system and also lots of folks on dutch campsites using them. (but in the end i just got my dongle way up high with powered usb hubs every 5 meteres.

I would love to do something like this... Just get a small RV and roll, work form the road... Some day...
