What the hell is Australian Football League playing?

Jesus, a huge sold out stadium in Sydney with a huge round field, goal post with 4 uprights, kicking and running with a football. Kind of like rugby and kind of like soccer. I don't think that I've ever seen this in the USA.

Fast and furious action.

I like this, Australian National Rugby League - http://www.nrl.com

You've only just discovered Aussie Rules ?

garce 09-23-2012 04:17 AM

This is the sport the NFL would be if all the Divas and Prima Donnas weren't allowed to wear their armor.

You forgot to mention Basketball - they have to dribble the ball in Aussie Rules Football, too. If Australia was cold and frozen, these fuckers would probably play this game on ice.

Trying to find video of Warwick Capper's legendary mark in the 1980s. A mark is where they use the backs of one or more unsuspecting players as a step up to catch the ball from about twice their normal height.

Aussie Rules is great, they used to let us play it at school sometimes, but people always got too battered.

In the 80's in the UK it used to be on channel4.

fitzmulti 09-23-2012 08:29 AM

I've been a fan of Aussie Rules Football since the mid 80's when ESPN used to show the Grand Final live...
GREAT sport...
Very exciting to watch in person, too!

The nfl needs good field goal kickers, that is about the only position those guys could play (If they were lucky)

How many times does someone get a knees to the head? Looks like every other minute. Maybe American football with all their gear are not so much pussies but at least a little smarter? Looks like a great game though, if only I could understand what they are doing half of the time. Better than American football which is all hype and posturing.

Maybe, but at least NFL players don't wear throwback 1975 NBA faggy shorts.

It actually is not a very violent sport, it is hard on the body as with any other contact sport, however it is not violent or anywhere near as hard hitting as rugby (body contact wise).

Actually, there are a few ex AFL players who are now kickers in the NFL.

I remeber watching it in the 80's when it was on British telly and it seemed that they stopped just as often as they do in handegg, except in handegg it seemed to be for no better reason than for an advert break while the aussies stopped for a mass brawl.

I think you will find all sports have changed quite a bit when it comes to fighting since the 80's.

Watch a full game and you will be lucky to to see a single fight, on or off the field :winkwink:
