Who is best for small dedicated?
Who is best for small dedicated packages? I have begun to consider going with that kind of solution, but I need more info.
I'd like something somewhat monitored for uptime, with a control panel, and help for stuff I can't manage. I guess that's "managed"... I am looking for a basic setup. Nothing fancy, in terms of hardware, but not a 486 either. ;) Bandwidth will probably start in the 75-100 gig range. Looking for a good price, but also a reliable and solid service. Who would you go with? Or, if you provide this kind of hosting, what's your offer? Thanks... |
Oh, by the way... The price to beat is SinHost's. I haven't been happier with any other host, so they have my attention right now.

I am headed out. Valentine's day, Vail would kill me if I kept working. ;) I will check this thread, as well as email and ICQ, when we get back.
|
i'm sure you can beat sinhosts prices if you shop enough, but i doubt you will be the quality. ask yourself which is more important.

Some really good suggestions here. Though I am reaffirming how expensive dedicated is for smaller folks like me.

Mike @ webair dot com will take care of you. email him. <img src=http://www.overmindesign.com/emoticons/breakdance.gif> |
Thanks, Fletch. I like their offer to beat any comparable offer. Something to look into tomorrow.
I just need to take this moment and point out how cool it would be to get a good hosting account at reasonable adult pricing, on a Mac. One day, Blood Money will be huge... If for no other reason so I can get my own colocated XServe. ;) |
Sweet Jebus, Fletch! I just realized you only signed up 5-6 months before me. You really *are* a huge fucking board whore.

Datahosters (in my signature) are good. I have a small 5mbs server with them, works like a charm. :)

My advice would be go look at the 'dedicateds special offers' forum on webhosttalking. And when you've found a few that are in your price range, right hardware, right management etc. Do a search on the board for comments about the company.

I think that what he means is that you have hosts on here that have been posting for a while; they are accountable for their business. With the good comes the bad. You might get business from GFY?but if your connection goes down, your customer service isn't up to par, etc...that gets publicized as well.
It?s a 2 way street |
Yeah, that makes some sense. Any host whose reputation is highly visible has to be careful, or they are dead. Of course, that doesn't mean the only good hosts are on the boards!

Want to host with Candid ? Here's a little DIARY of events so far.
---------------------- Feb 5 - Friend of mine contacted Jason at CandidHosting to get setup for a single server. Faxed and paid. Feb 7 - Was told he may actually get his server setup today. Feb 8 - Dreaming about my new server. I'm so excited. I gotta go pee now. Feb 10 - I had a wet dream last night about my server. It looked a little like Mena Suvari in American Beauty. Feb 12 - Talked with Jason again. Jason said server queue was really jammed, but server would be ready tomorrow. Feb 14 - Jason says some other girl is handling it. Should be up soon. Email address to contact was given, no reply yet. Feb 15 - No word from Candid today. Had Maple & Brown Sugar oatmeal for breakfast. |

One word...
SINHOST. :thumbsup |
Gothweb,
The best I could do is $125/mo on that. So you'd be saving $25. But really. Ask yourself if moving is worth A. the time and headache involved, things can and will go wrong. B. Ruining a relationship with a company that has previously helped you out and done you right. I just don't understand folk moving for a pittance ($20-$100) in savings per month, when they are 100% happy with their current place. Brad is a great guy, and runs a tight ship. I like to think I'm on the same level, but in somewhat different areas. I won't get into what we think we do better and vice-versa here, but the fact is even if we were just as good as sinhost, you just turned your back on a company that has done you right for so long. Is that how you want to reward people for doing you right? Er.. sorry. The above looks like I'm railing on you, but I'm really not. :) It's just a general observation I've seen. I guess I just like to see people rewarded for good work. -Phil |
Ah, I should clarify. I used to be with SinHost, but am not currently. Part of a past partnership was free hosting, so at that point I strayed from SinHost.
So I agree with what you say about loyalty, but at this point, it doesn't apply completely. Given the important of quality and service, though I agee totally about risking it all for $25 a month. It isn't worth it. |
