Pre-Ordered an iPhone 5

What are the odds I will send it back before 30 days and trade it in for a Samsung Galaxy S3?

BIGTYMER 09-17-2012 06:18 AM

Zero.

I'm pretty sure I've been GFY's longest running Android fanboy.

Have an s3 and love it but preordered an iPhone 5 for iOS app development. Widescreen is gonna be huge. 2 million preorders in 24 hours.

Why would you return a Porsche to buy a Dodge?

Rochard 09-17-2012 09:05 AM

Seems like the new iPhone will be the best selling phone to date, which is impressive.

However, I'm not into the iPhone thing. We've never had a problem with a cell phone until we had an iPhone. The iPhone has broken three times, and then broke a fourth time at the worst possible time ever - while on vacation in Hawaii. We've also had other problems with the phone trying to get simple things to work. I'm not really a noob to iPhones - We have half a dozen iPods and iTouches - but still have problems with the iPhone. I don't see how they are better than any other phone.

The iPhone is one of the worst phones ever made, but it is one of the best pocket computers ever made. :2 cents: I hardly talk on mine, so for me it's a just a great pocket computer. I'd carry an older Motorola or an old Nokia if I wanted a great phone for talking.

My first 2 4S models were bad. It took me three months before I had a working phone.

First Apple experience!

I have had just the opposite experience. Nothing but problems with Android stuff and smooth sailing with Iphones. Luck of the draw I guess. :upsidedow

Minus the fact it just came out today that the S3 is slow as shit compared to the A6 chip

MPGdevil 09-17-2012 12:06 PM

No surprise this will be the best selling iPhone. The 4 -> 4S wasn't much of an upgrade so it is the first noticeable update in two years.

I doubt that it'll be the best selling phone ever. The S3 has already shipped a considerable amount more than the 2 million iPhone 5s already pre-ordered.

That said, I'm still interested in what Apple has to offer and can't really judge without actually holding and putting one to use myself. I'd say at this point it's got a 75% chance of being returned for S3.

I used to own an iphone, then switched to S2 and recently S3

My experience is that iphone is for the basic users and Android for advanced users.. the options with Androids seems alot cooler, like being able to download a nzb file and submit it to a form on my popcorn box and stuff..

Got a link to that?

I still have a hard time believing that a 1ghz 2 core processor with 1 gig of RAM can out perform a 1.5ghz quad core with 2 gig of RAM.

pamon 09-17-2012 06:08 PM

speed tests are showing 3x improvements over 4s speeds on the newest iPhone 5. Have owned both for a while. iPhone interface is slick and sexy but for a power user and a user who wants to do anything with their phone, android can't be beat. There is jailbreaking your iPhone to put other apps on there for advanced needs, but both offer competitive choices in the mobile space.

ExtremeBank_Adam 09-17-2012 06:14 PM

Ordered 2 iPhones just after they went on preoder last week... both were due to arrive on September 21. Just checked the order status online, and one says due October 2, the other October 5. Guess wife and daughter have to wait a couple extra weeks.

acctman 09-17-2012 06:30 PM

my iPhone 5 is waiting to be shipped, I got charged earlier today. Ship/Delivery date is still set for 9/21

I think I will get the upgrade in 6 months or so. See what the feed back is on it. I love my Iphone though and have never had any problems with it. Does everything I need it to do.

so does mine... fingers crossed it doesnt change.

I have a "loaner" iPhone 4S from Verizon right now and if I don't return it by the end of the month, those dicks will charge me $901.00 for it!

Stephen 09-18-2012 09:43 AM

An iPhone is a photo/video camera you never leave at home.

The iPhone 5 offers better imaging, making a compelling reason to upgrade (I have 3GS)

I use mine for making voice notes as much as I do for making phone calls...

What's the time stamp on your order? I ordered from the AT&T website at 1:50am and it says it will be delivered on the 21st, however the order status online still says "Processing" as the status. Card has not been billed yet.

It's already the best selling phone ever. The iPhone comprises something like 33% of the phone market. Android devices are so fragmented it's unlikely an Android phone could hit that mark.

GSIII has been out since April. It hit the 10m mark in July. It hit the 20m mark in September.

IP5 hit 2m in 24 hours.

I could only order one at a time, so the first is 3:52 AM, the second at 3:58 AM. I am East coast, though, so I guess I ordered them even before you did. But, I ordered from the Apple website, not AT&T's. (But I do use AT&T for service.)

EDIT: Just checked the status again... the one I ordered at 3:52 AM now says delivery on the 21st, the other still says October 5. However, neither shows as shipped yet. They charged me for the Apple Care already, but not for either of the phones yet.

That's what I have now... but wife and kids all have iPhones.

xenigo 09-18-2012 12:58 PM

The deal breaker for me with the GSIII and all of the Galaxy phones for that matter, including the Galaxy Nexus... is their AMOLED displays. People rave about them, and people seem to think they're great... but they're absolutely terrible IMO. AMOLED screens make every color fluorescent. I want super accurate color.

The biggest problem I have with them is burn in. I don't think most people realize how bad the problem actually is. You know that status bar at the top and nav buttons on the bottom of ICS? Well... how would you like to see those no matter what you're looking at? LOL

I had a $900 Pioneer head unit in my car a while back and that had a gorgeous AMOLED screen... guess what happened to it? All the soft controls at the bottom became one solid blur.

The IPS display in the iPhone will never have that problem... because the backlight is behind the LCD and not a function of the panel itself. And it's color accuracy is spot-on. I think the guys on the tech forums wishing for giant HD AMOLED television screens are completely fucking nuts.

S4 will be out in March.

I'm thinking now that I will probably keep the iPhone until then and then offload it, and but the S4. The iPhone definitely has more of a resale value than the S3, and will probably hold up nicely over the next 6 months.

My brother in law has upgraded his iPhone each time and each time only had to pay a small difference. That's not happening with a Samsung phone. Trade in on value on my Galaxy S is under $50...which is where it has been since the S2 came out.

My S1 is 2 years old now and I have no sign up Burn In on my AMOLED screen.

I think it just comes from your dislike of apple. There is nothing wrong with the iPhone. cancelled my 3gs iPhone plan and have been using it as an iPod ever since and make calls on Skype.

One thing though it's really starting to hurt me not having a smart phone. Having a junky regular phone that doesn't work so well has hampered my social life as it locks up and because it has some other issues the sound is hard to set reliably, hate it!

qwe 09-18-2012 02:29 PM

had iphone and it's the biggest pain in the ass with itunes, that shit never worked right.... so much happier with sg3 now, just drag and drop mp3 files and you're good to go, want to transfer mp3 files back to pc? sure no problem, don't need to encore shit in apple format... not to mention i need bigger screen for work stuff, apples tiny screen doesn't work well for me

Sly 09-18-2012 02:31 PM

I'm not going to do it, but I'm curious, what would it cost to upgrade from a 4S?

If you can manage to offload your 4S you might be able to cover most of the almost $600 it would cost to buy the iPhone outright.

acctman 09-18-2012 02:56 PM

my iPhone 5 has shipped its in Memphis TN right now, should be in GA tomorrow.

I just posted my new-as-of-4-hours-ago 32gb AT&T 4S on CL for $500. I had a fat yellow spot in the upper left side of the screen when the phone would get warm... fortunately covered under warranty. Worked out perfectly for reselling. We'll see what happens. The spammers are raping my phone number...

Well, I don't think this is true. I get the joke, I get the humor... and I understand some idiots do buy shit they don't need, or buy it because they think it makes them look "cool".

But there are also very savvy consumers who like to stay on the bleeding edge, and like their productivity devices to be as quick as possible and fully functional.

"Need" is hard to quantify. Technically we don't need anything more than the roof over heads, food, and water. We don't need to be anything other than cavemen.

Here's my philosophy; I have a great appreciation for the advancements of technology. I really wish I could live to see the year 3000... the technology... it would simply be unbelievable. But all I can have is what's here within our lifetime, and I want to get the most of it. If you have the attitude of "well, I've got this tin can... and the string still works fine... and I can still hear everyone clearly... so why upgrade?" IMO you're not getting as much out of life as you could be. You're not experiencing the fruits of our limited time spent here on earth.

The other thing is that your carrier bill never goes away. You're always technically paying for the latest and greatest, but you're not able to utilize it unless you throw down for that handset upgrade. How much does AT&T spend to upgrade from HSPA+ to LTE? Billions. You're paying for that no matter what. Why not get the most out of what you're paying for?

You can sell your old handset and upgrade for $50-$100. Small price to pay. :2 cents:

You're probably right but I figured I was due an upgrade, and it was about £8 extra on my monthly bill.

I also have a Macbook Pro (2010) and Ipad 2 so I obviously like the brand. But most people that have used these devices love them... certainly my Macbook Pro is definitely the best laptop I have ever owned... not in terms of power... but pleasure to use and build quality.

My next Apple product will be a Macbook Pro 13" Retina... hopefully.
