Where to go in Africa or South America

After 9 months Brazil, two months Thailand i am looking for my next destination for the next 4 months. What do you think is a good destination in Africa or South America? I never been to Africa, but looks very nice.

There must be good internet, cheap living, not too dangerous, friendly people. I always will spent longer time on one spot cause i keep working on my internet projects. Find out that i don't like tourist areas like there are so many in Thailand, than you only see European people.

Some countries that looks interesting:

- Colombia
- Panama
- Ecuador
- Uganda
- Ghana

Tips and advice are welcome so i get more ideas.

Theo 09-13-2012 10:56 PM

South Africa that is, my African friend sitting next to me just said

Tasty1 09-14-2012 01:42 AM

South Africa could be interesting indeed Theo. Forget to mention it. I have family living there and my brother lived there for some months.

DamageX 09-14-2012 01:47 AM

I hear Somalia's nice this time of year.

Scat in the Hat 09-14-2012 02:23 AM

if you're single, Panama or Colombia.

What I like about Panama is, there are plenty of women from other central and south american countries.

I've never been to Colombia but I've heard nothing but good things.

seeandsee 09-14-2012 02:50 AM

i would visit some safe countries :D

sperbonzo 09-14-2012 06:26 AM

Panama and Columbia are great! To stay for a few months, I would chose Panama, the internet and infrastucture is better, the crime is lower, and it's just safer, but while you are there, it's easy to take weekend trips to Colombia.

Be careful in South Africa. Capetown is still safe, but Jo'burg, Durban, etc.... have VERY bad crime and you really need to watch your ass. Still a beautiful place, and taking a trip up to Kruger game park is something everyone should do once in their life.

Bat_Man 09-14-2012 06:35 AM

Surely South America......go to Equador and see the sons of Incas.....good day...

shimmy2 09-14-2012 06:36 AM

ethiopia for the win

Tasty1 09-14-2012 12:07 PM

Yes, it is hard to decide. Africa (and the woman;) look so nice and such a new culture and way of living with a lot of friendly people. I read and hear that most African countries became more safe, it is not like 20 years ago, it is booming there. And robbery take place in every big city. Cape Verde is getting a lot of tourist now that Egypt has a lot of troubles. Lots of people also say that Ethiopia is very nice.

My nephews, uncles and brother have been robbed in South Africa and got all a gun on their head. But i heard that happens more in the big cities.

I get attracted more and more to start in Panama. Booming economy, very possitive reaction about that country. I can go to Colombia, and neigbouring countries from there.

@seeandsee what are safe countries? I saw more homeless drunk people on the street of Los Angeles than anywhere else. In Holland i lived in the town center and every weekend i saw from my window people get beating up by other drunk people. My mothers house got broken into and i hear that from more and more friends, thanks to the open borders. In Thailand the two bungalows next to mee get broken into and laptops where stolen, that happens a lot in Thailand. Also people that drove with a bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok get robbed by the driver. And so on, and so on. I spoke a woman from Uganda, she said Uganda is getting safer and safer. When someone robes a store there is a big change that an angry crowd will kill the robber ....

Sly 09-14-2012 12:13 PM

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "Africa looks nice."

Screwed Up 09-14-2012 01:50 PM

Africa in general is very beautiful.
South Africa is like a weird mix of the first and the third world. Very unique.

Internet is crap or non-existent outside any capital. Crime is everywhere and nowhere. You have to be there to understand it. Anything could happen at any time.
Forget about "booming". The Technology in Africa is made up of Chinese fakes. Whatever wouldn't pass standards in the first world.

Porn is illegal in Africa.
Watch your ass. And get ready to pay off the cops if you have porn with you. If you decide not to pay, the higher up the food chain, the more expensive the bribe...

v4 media 09-14-2012 02:01 PM

South Africa is pretty much your only chance if your work is porn related. If you're more mainstream.. Morocco is a great place to live for a few months.

davethedope 09-14-2012 02:08 PM

stop trying to be cute and stay where the fuck you are.

Jey p 09-14-2012 02:15 PM

Argentina will be a nice destination for traveling. I would not advice you to just staying in Buenos Aires for 4 months, but travelling all around Argentina would be cool.
You could visit these places:

No more like: "it is great".

By booming i don't mean the technology. I mean that the fastest growing cities are in africa. The fastest growing tourism areas are in africa. Prices of land are growing while they are declining in the rest of the world.

I don't have porn with me. I am working more on dating and mainstream websites. The internet could be a problem indeed. That is why i will stick a long time on a good place and just make weektrips inlands. Thanks for the tips.

I will go to Argentina also. I heard Mendoza must be a great destination. In January i can get in Brazil again and i will visit a friend in Buenos Aires before, than go to Foz do Igacau, RIO and rent a car and drive through the inlands of Brazil to Salvador de Bahia.

Tasty1 09-14-2012 09:06 PM

I think the best to do now is go to South America. Start in Panama or Colombia and stay in several countries for some months till i go back to Brazil.

Africa looks great, but internet is often bad. Also in some African countries they are very strict about porn, although i never take porn with me, i am programming some adult related sites. I don't know how strict they are about that. Who can inform me? Cause i want to go for a few months i better visit Africa next year when i can do it short time (2 months) without working there to much, just keeping the servers up.

So, i will look for some good tickets to South America and leave in october after the Prague/Amsterdam events.

I would like to know more about regulation in Africa. Is programming an adult site forbidden? Is visiting an adult website forbidden? Africa is big and evey country has another main religion. I don't want to live in a islam country.

Chosen 09-14-2012 09:59 PM

Haven't been to Africa or South America yet...

i am in similar situation like you .... looking to escape european winter and discover some new part of the world....Though my prority is to learn spanish...So I am looking for some nice place to stay longer time there, go to school/university, and work on my inet projects....I don't have to have fancy lifestyle...so I am looking for some place to live quite OK for like 800-1000 usd monthly (yes I can do that even in eastern EU - Poland : )... could be some smaller city with nice landscapes...
I consider Ecuador though it's hard to get there from Europe (expensive tickets)....While tickets to Dominican Republic are for 200 euros one way from Brussel ;-).....
as for your questions:
as for going to Africa and working on your adult projects...You were in Thailand, right ? Did something wrong happened to you ? There you have answer....(v()()p()n()
If you are looking for some safe place in Africa, I think that you should forget about South Africa...My friend was studying there in Capstad/capetown and he told me that going back from clubbing's night without car was like asking to be robbed/ murdered...what i heard (i wasn't there myself) is that South Africa is generally speaking is not so safe (but my guess is that in some/many places it will be safe...now is the question if you have time/want to risk to look for those places ;-) )
you may take a look here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._homicide_rate

What I could assume from Africa is (after visiting its one of most developed countries - Morocco, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:UN...eport_2011.svg) that Internet over there is not what you could expect, even after Thailand...In Morocco it was very hard/ almost impossible to find hotel/ guesthouse with WIFI...while in Thailand many of them had it...My guess is that it could be easier if you would rent house in some nice city (like Essaouira or Ourzazate for example) and get your cable/ DSL to it...They also have 3 G in Morocco (do they in Thailand, or still not yet ;] ), it works OK in cities over 50 000 people. they ask you for passport to get 3 G Sim card. I was working on my projects though there without problems (beeing like 3 weeks in there). 3 G/ Edge it's usually your only choice (except inernet cafes with not that much privacy) if you are "in motion" in that country :)What is great in Morocco is their food - they have similiar to that in Southern Europe in cheap prices ;-) - like fresh orange juice for 0,5 euro etc., fresh coffee for 0,5 euro , delicious cakes, nuts also very cheap. What sucks in Morocco is (as from coming from Western Europe) that they are not so open about sexuality - well, at least officially and what tradition says to them ;-). In rural areas Moroccans are very conservative people yet friendly and - don't be surprised - honest. It only takes some time to know them better, as its completely different culture from European one. And if you are coming from Holland having problem with Moroccan immigrants - seeing these people acting completely different in their own country is kind of surprising...Berbers are OK.

Ghana - sounds nice to me... wasn't there yet, but it's not so expensive and ladies are beautiful over there....Internet infrastructure wouldn't be so good, I assume...

Tasty1 09-15-2012 12:36 AM

Problem in Africa is that there is good internet connection in the big cities. And the problems with big cities is that those are the most dangerous. And i don't realy like big cities. I never would stay in a big city in South Africa longer than 1 week. Cap Verde is also nice, for 300 euro you rent an appartment. But i will go to africa next year for a short time to explore it.

Marocco sounds nice, but i want the real black African countries :) In Thailand eveywhere is wifi. I will buy i mifi modem also, is very handy in south america. It is a wifi modem you put your simcard in and you have your 3g router.

Ecuador tickets are expensive, better start in an surrounding country and travel there. I don't care so much about the ticket price. Every month i stay in a country like Ecuador i save at least 1000 euro extra compared to Amsterdam if i have the same lifestyle. But i will go out a lot, make fun and do whatever i want :) The longer i stay away from Europe, the more money i save and the more countries i can explore. I am also looking to invest here in land etcetra. In asian countries you cant own land.

With 1000 USD you could live nice in Brazil, except in expensive cities like RIO. Bolivia is the cheapest country and Ecuador is also vey cheap.

I start with a Spanish course, don;t speak so much spanish yet.

Thanks for reminding me of this. You're right. 3G with the sim cards is becoming very wide spread in most African countries. However it's not very reliable. I have this note to self every time I'm in Africa "don't get pissed off when the internet goes down, shit happens". The worst is not when it's down, but when it's up but so slow that connections freeze. Because you end up waiting, trying and reloading pages, just wasting time.

I used to think the same. But it's an illusion. Because you end up working less, thus making less money. You need to be very, very well organized and disciplined to travel and work at the same time. In theory it sounds perfect, but in practice ...

There is a cross over period when you are an expat when you realize you're not on vacation or a typical tourist. When this point is crossed, you stop doing stupid shit tourists would, spend less money and learn the local routines as well. In my opinion, this is when the country you are staying in becomes more fun and more like home.

I agree. The first month, or months you make a lot of fun. But than you get more energy and more ideas beacuse of the inspiring environment. I ended up doing more with my time than i did when i was 'comfortably" with my life in Holland. "Huisje, boompje beestje" we call that in Holland (House, Tree, Dog, saying you are happy with your family life and not willing to go for adventure. And i went to the pub almost all day in Brazil, but woke up early, and working more efficient in Brazil. In Holland i took less free time than in Brazil but got less work done.

That is why i like to stay longer in one place, not travelliing every 4 days or every two weeks.

Looking for tickets now :) I will go for 11 months or so. Colombia (maybe start in Surinam), Bolivia, Brazil. And maybe Panama. There is no road between Panama and Colombia, so maybe i skip Panama than. But Panama must be good country to set up an offshore company.

Tasty1 11-13-2012 12:10 PM

For people interested. Stayed 4 days at Bonaire. Now i am in Surinam for already three weeks and stay a couple of weeks longer.

Cape Town one of the most beautiful places in the world. Also they have great wine tours out there. Bring a sleeping bag and a bike and you just muck about drinking wine.

If you go to Panama, talk to a lawyer there about executive order 343. It is a way for US and western Europeans to get permanent residency cheaply and quickly

The Panama visa is new. A lot of information can be found on the internet. Panama is also very friendly with offshore income (no tax, no needs for bookkeeping). That makes it a very interesting destination for a traveller like me.
