I'm buying a Intel Core i7 3930K cpu and Radeon HD 7970 videocard.
What motherboard should i buy for that and why?
Keep in mind i will add a 2nd Radeon sooner or later.

Thank you.

Biostar makes some quality motherboards. :2 cents:

Dirty F 09-11-2012 11:08 PM

Also i'm buying 16 or 32 gigs of ram. Anything specific i should look for?

Yeah well, i built a computer a couple of years ago. That was the last time i read and learned about hardware really. Obviously things changed a lot in those years. I rather ask now then buy the wrong thing. I've been reading sites and reviews for the last 3 hours as well.

Dirty F 09-11-2012 11:35 PM

This is what i've got so far on my shopping list.

Intel Core i7 3930K
MSI X79A-GD65 Motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 670 4GB Superclocked
OCZ AGT3-25SAT3-120G SSD
Seagate ST3000DM001 3 TB HD
G.Skill 8 GB DDR3-1333 (16 total)

get this motherboard.

ASUS Rampage IV Extreme

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=65...S&promoid=1360

It's a great motherboard. Has 8 DIMMs and can support up to 64gb of ram.

Vapid - BANNED FOR LIFE 09-12-2012 12:30 AM

It's respectable even if you're not :winkwink:

Fuck the Sharkoon case off, spend a little more dollars on a decent case that's going to help keep everything cool inside.

I'd go with something from cooler master, if you just want a mid tower check out the cooler master C70 and the few cases I've listed below.

What cpu cooling are you going to use?

I'd also up the anti on the ram, get some 1600MHZ sticks or even higher, that board will support up to 2400MHZ.

I have a biostar with a 3ghz processor running at 4ghz/25 degrees Celsius.
I strongly suspect you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

Awesome, this is the kind of info that i need.
What cpu cooling do you recommend?

Edit: Stupid question perhaps but doesn't the CPU come with a cooler already?

The cpu will come with a standard heatsink and fan yes, but let's face it their stock and will do the job I guess, but I wouldn't be building a decent system like that and relying on an essentially free heatsink to do the job.

I'd go with a Corsair Hydro Series (Liquid) cooler. They are more expensive then air coolers (not all that hard to fit) but they are maintenance free (no need to change coolant) and will keep the cpu really cold, therefore it will last longer then usual.

They come in a variety of sizes, I've got the H100 see here: http://www.corsair.com/en/cpu-coolin...pu-cooler.html

Full list of Liquid coolers here: http://www.corsair.com/cpu-cooling-k...pu-cooler.html

There are many other brands of course, eg: Thermaltake make them ect ect... I just like Corsair.

But you could easily use one of the smaller ones without a drama, they just basically attach to the cpu like a normal heatsink does, then you bolt the radiator to (depending on case) the top of the case, bottom, or back. You'll need to ensure the case you end up getting supports top/bottom mounted radiators (most if not all decent cases do) But it's going to be money well spent, and it's going to prolong the life of your cpu.

Now, Liquid and water cooling isn't for everyone and it can be a pain in the ass to install (at least the first time) so take a look at this list of decent air coolers.

http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm

If you decide on any of these, and choose a case let me know and I'll make sure it can support it if you like ok.

Dirty F 09-12-2012 02:41 AM

As i will be building the system myself there is no way i'm gonna mess with water cooling :)
I'll browse through the air coolers and let you know. Thanks.

Yup, can totally understand. I'm sure you'll find a decent air cooler to suite you np's at all.

Also does it matter in any way if buy my ram in 4 gig pieces or 8 gigs?
The motherboard can hold 128 gigs. With 8 slots available that means you need 8 x 16 gigs to fill that up. Does 16 gigs even exist? (not that i'm gonna do that ofcourse)

That motherboard you listed has 4 dimm slots (up to 64GB)

Quote:

"Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 1.5 Volt DDR3 1066/1333/1600/1800*/2133*/2400* (OC) DRAM, 64GB Max"
You can get 8GB (single sticks) but I haven't seen 16GB sticks (never really looked though). 16GB or 32GB is still going to be awesome, and do anything you want. Your better off getting 4X4GB sticks (Quad Channel) if possible. They'll run better then two 8GB sticks.

MSI is not that bad (far from the best or anywhere close to it. Not the worse though), but yes, I would go with Gigabyte or Asus over MSI and some other brands without a doubt.

I'm in same boat, I built my last system 4 years ago & about to build a new one. I'm looking at using the same CPU, so will watch to see what other suggest.

I was looking at this mobo as it has a lot of nice options, but I dunno if I want a built on vid card anyway..

How about a nice 4 TB USB 3.0 external drive for backup at the same time (not fun stuff I know, but important)

martinsc 09-12-2012 09:05 PM

when it comes to motherboards - i'm always going with Gigabyte... never let me down and always keeps me positively surprised with cool and new features.
