Is anyones word worth a fuck in Florida?

I've been trying to sell a 24 foot box truck and a nice Harley Davidson for the past two weeks.
I've talked to over two dozen potential buyers.
Only 1 of them actually showed up to look while the rest have all been complete liars.

I have been buying and selling shit for 15 years up north. I came down here so I didn't have to deal with the winters anymore.
But if this is the type of people I'm going to have to deal with I should maybe think twice about doing business in this state...

Anything that happens in Florida is jacked. True story.

Come to California where they make you an offer and ask for your bank details without seeing the sale item so they can "make a deposit." lol

Welcome to USA in 2012:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

You aren't kidding with this. I've been selling various things via Craigslist, like my Nissan Armada for one. We have another truck to pull the boat, and the Armada is WAY overkill, especially with everyone's finances like they are nowadays. Not a SINGLE person in TWO MONTHS has kept an appointment to show up with cash or a trade. It's ridiculous. Fucking Florida. I used to buy or sell a car every month in North Carolina, but there's just something about this area that makes people flaky. Maybe it's the water.

That said, I have met plenty of people who DO have a word worth something in FL .. just not on Craigslist.

Yeah people are fucked up down here.
I would normally get 1 or 2 people a year up north that wouldn't show up like they said they would.
I'm counting 23 so far in 2 weeks here.
Is it really that hard to say, Nah it's too much money, or Ok but thanks anyways?
Jesus.. Fucking people man... Lazy ass no honor having fucking worthless slugs..

Most people who are in Florida are from up north.... :2 cents:

This is normal and I'm surprised you haven't figured out how to deal with this yet. Here's a couple pointers:

#1) Ask their name and use it and tell them yours
#2) Ask them for their phone number
#3) Offer easy directions from somewhere easy to find close by
#4) If they are leaving immediately ask them when you can expect them and say something like "should I call you if you havent arrived by x:xx to help with directions?" the answer to this question doesn't matter
#5) If they say they will come over "at 4pm" or tomorrow or some other later time, tell them that they need to call you an hour beforehand or "before they leave" to confirm "because oftentimes people's plans can change"

You will still get lots of people calling and flaking, but at least you won't be expecting appointments that never come and experience the inconvenience of sticking around for them.

Those are some good tips.
I do get their name,
I have caller ID so I know their number
I always give directions or the address if they want to use gps.

My issue is I've been doing this for a long time with pretty consistently good results.
And in the past two weeks it's like I walked into the twilight zone or something. It's a totally different breed of motherfuckers you guys got down here.

It's everywhere not just Florida

Had a friend that got a house in a tax sale. In the garage was a small block Chevy, stripped. So we thought he could sell for the metal. About 100 inquiries later, ALL were no shows. 1st $50 could have walked it out the door for any easy $50-100 profit.

are you dealing on craigslist? That site is unreal when it comes to stuff like this. For some reason if it is in the paper people are so different but craigslist brings out the bottom of the bottom in people.

marlboroack 08-28-2012 02:57 PM

Only if they own a fan boat.

Want to hear something crazy? I do this every time, even steps #4 and #5 and they STIL don't show up, haha! :1orglaugh

And EACH TIME, they've NEVER answered phone or text ... ever again, for that matter. Even when I text things like "you're a dick, you know that?"

I haven't yet texted "you're a dick, you know that?"

But I have felt like it plenty.

Yes craigslist, ebay, facebook groups. All internet based.
