A serious traffic accident has caused 36 deaths at the early morning of August 26, in Yan?an City, Shaanxi Province. The specific number of casualties is still under further verification

A double-decker sleeper bus with 39 people, including staff and passengers, rear-ended a tanker carrying methanol at 2:00 in the morning on August 26, 2012. Both vehicles caught fire, and only three people escaped from the burning wreckage of the bus. The driver of the tanker, who did not sustain any injuries, is now in custody. The small number of escapees is allegedly due to the fact that the accident occurred at 2 in the morning, when most passengers were sleeping, and most importantly, because the double-decker bus had no emergency exits, and all the windows were firmly sealed, impeding a quick escape. The fire has been extinguished at the scene of the accident, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.

Methanol fires are a bitch, there is no smoke or visible flame, basically you have no idea what is going on, you just burn and don't know why. It can be put out with water, but you have to know what is happening. Killed and burnt two drivers in an Indy 500 once prompting the switch to ethanol fuel. nasty.

Worst driving I have ever seen is in Beijing in particular, and China in general. I visited in 2004, and on the way from the capital to the Great Wall our driver nearly managed to kill us three separate times. Makes LA seem tame in comparison.

This is how we know China is a backwards-ass country. The driver of the tanker who was rear-ended is "now in custody".

When some runs into the back of your vehicle, it's always the other guy's fault. Always.

That's still not clear. But I guess the bus driver should take the main blame although he was already dead.

Now there is more cars on the road.and no one knows how many people dead on their way to home every day.

What the fuck is with these Chinese people? Can we at least have the best traffic pileups for ourselves? They have to beat us at that too?

It 's a bus with room for sleeping.no windows. And when that happens,Many people were sleeping .When they wake up they found their's body was burning.

Maybe it will serve as warning to you.but not to us.
Because our traffic department would love to see more accident. then they will win more grants and progress more awards ceremony.Believe me, this is true

Need more traffic laws. That would have stopped this, or maybe ban buses.

There are additives you can put in the methanol to make it burn with a flame.

You'd think they would have an emergency exit...

If you slam your brakes on, and a guy runs into you -- then technically, you did "cause" the accident -- but if someone is travelling too close to you at a high enough rate of speed, they're not going to be able to stop in time. You are allowed to put your brakes on for any reason you like. It's up to the guy behind you to not be tailgating.

No emergency exit. this type bus have already forbidden in other country. but not in this country.

Although this is a horrendous loss of life and a horrific accident, shit like this happens in crappy third world countries everyday.
