Going to Cancun, any advice?

We have this AA credit, and flights to Cancun to Miami are non-stop and in our credit. What advice would you have for places to stay? I see a groupon for a Ocean Maya Royale that is all inclusive for 550. I'm not sure I can stay in one resort for 4 days though.

Thanks,

J

Hit up Ruth at Paxum. Pretty sure she lives there.

keysync 08-26-2012 03:19 PM

Do NOT go to market 28? I thnk it's called. You run the serious risk of not returning.
Oh and when looking at merchandise while you're there. Do NOT say "This looks like it's made in China"... They do not fucking like that....Trust me.. The only time in my adult life I have been literally afraid. I was clear in the back of that market in a little shop and said that about some sunglasses...
The guy said something to the effect of "You need to remember where you are. You're in the carribean. Your laws don't apply here" As he was cleaning a pistol with a I'm going to fucking gut you like a pig look on his face...
Wasn't the highlight of my trip but I'll never forget it.
If The City night club is still open you must go there at least one time.
It's expensive as hell but a really neat experience.
And find a way to get to Isla Mujeres (spelling) Take a golf cart tour of the island it's really amazing. There's some very beautiful cliffs and just down the road is cardboard shacks people actually live in. It's fucking weird if you've never seen anything like that.
Oh and SUN SCREEN

we stayed here: http://www.barcelo.com/BarceloHotels...scription.aspx

last year when we went. Very very nice resort and all exclusive. Was not all that expensive. Great beaches and food. The drinks were not watered down at all. Would diffently go back :)

xNetworx 08-26-2012 05:54 PM

Don't venture away from the gringo spots :2 cents:

nikki99 08-26-2012 06:15 PM

Cancun is good funnnnnnn!

ggrrssyydik 08-26-2012 06:40 PM

Set up your ride from airport to your hotel ahead of time. There are alot of salesmen as soon as you step off the plane. Do not make eye contact with any of them. Isla Mujares is a nice place to go.

CS-Jay 08-26-2012 07:42 PM

How about for snorkeling? I like the golf cart idea!

1215 08-26-2012 09:53 PM

isla mujeres is really cool. had about 10 big parrot fish following me around. and there's a little island covered in these tiny baby crabs that are really cool.

if you go out at night, you'll see why vegas is a joke. not sure if these places are still open, but def check them out.

coco bongo - stage like 50 feet in the air, second floor along the wall and stay up there, because people up there piss into the crowd on the first floor!!

pat obriens for mardi gras night - you'll get TONS of titties and chicks making out for for CS!!
la boom - has a red phone booth in it and girls usually end up in there hooking up.
dady o and dady rock - awesome places.
senor frogs - has a water slide on the second floor and they were throwing the drunks down it. pretty funny when you realize it takes them outside to the water and not some dopey pool.

tulum is a cool touristy places with these pyramid like structures. the bathroom there is a toilet that hasn't been flushed since 1952 and you gotta pay 25 pesos to use it!

there's also bongs shaped as dicks. everywhere. you cannot escape the dick bongs.

ohhhh btw - get yourself in one of the adults only hotels, like blue bay village across from la 'boom. think it has a name change, but nothing worse then fucking kids running around screaming on vacation. you'll probably be surrounded by chicks in thongs and topless at bluebay - at least we were.

some german chick blew me at the pool bar because we told her she probably was really bad at it, and for some reason, she wanted to show 100 people that she was good at something. then some mexican dude who worked there came over with a video camera. man, it must've been 11am and people were already tanked!

and don't drink the water unless you want to shit your brains out on the reg.

1215 08-26-2012 09:54 PM

also, there's some bridge in the middle of town that all the mexican kids jump off when there's no boats - you probably shouldn't do that. i don't even know if you can swim.

xarizmendi 08-26-2012 10:59 PM

I would say you need to go to cocobongo, mandala and the city.
pat o was closed sometime this year i think and laboom has been closed for years now.
And yeah stay in the Hotel Zone, thats the safest places to be here in cancun.
If you can head to playa del carmen and hit playa mamitas or Kool beach club, awesome places to be at drinking some beer and enjoying the beach.
And I would recommend to have pesos on you that way you dont get ripped off with the currency exchange, should be at 12.5 pesos per dollar or so.

CS-Jay 08-27-2012 09:02 AM

how much are beers at the bars? 1215, you got video proof?

Far-L 08-27-2012 09:32 AM

Isla Mujeres has a cool pier and at the end of it there are a bunch of pylons that keep a dozen or so 6' to 12' nurse sharks penned in and for a few bucks you can go in and swim with them... :2 cents:

Definitely recommend making the drive to Chichen Itza - just spending your entire trip drinking and suntanning would be missing out on some very cool stuff to do there.

iwiiiiiiiiii 08-27-2012 09:36 AM

Just coming back from there, I went to xel-ha for snorkeling, was cool.

PS : Don't rent a car, you'll get arrested and ask for money from the cops. You better take the cab, but the cab that had a blue line on the car and well identified.

keysync 08-27-2012 10:06 AM

We went snorkling off the coast of Isla Mujeres. There's a reef there that you can snorkle but you can't touch it. It's a federal offense to touch the reef.
We took a guided snorkle trip to it. It's a 5 minute boat ride off the shore of the island.
Lots of fish to see. It was a neat experience.
I don't sugget you go if it's wavy. Or if you're prone to sea sickness. Because you will puke your guts out.

Yeah she does, been very helpful to me :)

newB 08-27-2012 10:27 AM

I've been several times. No problems at the mid-range places further down the beach, but every time I stayed at the higher-end places I had stuff swiped by the cleaning staff.

Also, ask "how much to go to..." before getting in a taxi. Otherwise you'll probably pay twice as much.

pornguy 08-27-2012 10:52 AM

1. get all your money form the ATM in PESOS as its the best exchange. If you think of it as 10 to 1 5k pesos is 500 dollars. Actually less but easy to think of it that way.

2. Market 28 is more than safe. But you can buy all the same things in the hotel zone for nearly the same price.

3. What are you looking to do, Stay in Cancun hotel zone? ( I would say this is best club wise ) Stay in the riviera Maya ( would be stuck in the hotel for the most part ) Or check out PLaya Delcarmen in whichcase RIU hotels has some really nice places in PlayaCar also the city is right there. Most hotels are now all inclusive which is good if you drink alot. If you dont might want to look at other options.

Over all its very nice but make sure to bring sun block or buy at least an spf 30 or so.

Jay,

Beers are cheap, booze is cheap, there are lots of bars/clubs where you pay a cover fee and that also includes all your drinks (local booze, you have to pay for the high end stuff)

If you plan to leave your all-inclusive and head out and about, one excellent suggestion is to find something to 'cover' your wristband. If you have a watch or wristbands those are great to cover it. When you're at local markets, and in cabs etc, and they see your wristband, they know you are a tourist, and you'll definitely get charged tourist prices. Of course, when you're walking around white as can be, or burnt red like a lobster, and looking at absolutely everything around you, that's also quite informative to locals about your 'status' :winkwink:

Wearing a wristband you'll also be subjected to lots of timeshare peeps, but if you've got an hour and a half to spare you can usually get yourself a free snorkeling/diving tour out of those, but you have to be willing to sit in on one of their talks, which, when you're only in town for 4 days, you might not want to waste the time on it (though they'll also buy you breakfast if you do a morning talk LOL)

Most cabs are fairly inexpensive, depends on where you're staying and how far you're going. They're not metered. For example, for me to take a 10 minute ride in a cab from my home to the local mall/grocery store typically costs me 30 pesos... which is like $2.50 or so (give or take the exchange rate). Someone said ask before you get in, that's a good idea, and don't forget you can always try to negotiate the price, but I've found when you compare cab fares here to cab fares up north, even if they're charging you more than normal rate here, you're still getting a killer deal

Just remember, most things are negotiable.

Xel-Ha is definitely great for snorkelling. You'll find TONS of good spots for snorkelling along the coast, or swimming with dolphins, or fishing, or diving.. lots of water sports available all year round. Bring a waterproof camera, it's totally worth it!

I hope you have a great trip! It really is beautiful here, oh, and another bonus is that it's perfectly legal for chicks to sunbathe topless on the beaches here! :Graucho

Beer is like 2.50 at the bars in the hotel zone.
A bottle of whiskey in a club is somewhere around 100 usd for lets say JW red label, Black its 150 or so.
I would stay away from the all inclusive drinks, or if you go to places like coco bongo I am pretty sure they offer the International open bar which gives you better booze, personally I think its worth the money since you wont be dying from the hangover next morning.

Chosen 08-27-2012 11:30 AM

second the Isla Mujares stuff.

The little cafe that is right next to wear the boat drops you off, you can drink a beer and eat seafood with your feet in the water, very nice.

We stayed at Temptations, it was pretty fun.

You can leave the hotels, you might want to take a tour to the ruins,

Chichen Itza Ruins , and they include a trip to the Cenote

nah, but tons of pictures! that place is king of lesbian titties and upskirts since half the the girls are dancing on the bar with no panties on!

the mardi gras night was just hilarious. girls were doing everything for a stupid bead to the point the girls had beads up to their nostrils.

forgot - beers don't cost a thing. most of the places were $25-$35 to get in and open bar till 3 to 6am.

usually you stay at the hotel bar till midnight, then your hotel should be taking people to a different bar each night via the hotel shuttle. this way you go with a group from your own place and all party together.

our hotel sent people to go out with us, and they all got us drinks whenever we wanted.

on top of that, you weren't allowed to tip at your hotel or the bar tenders who traveled with you. they seriously would not accept it. but when youre out at the clubs, throw a single in the air and you'll get your drink fast as shit.

if you go for new years, i might have to meet you there! think i've gone 4-5 times already.

1215 08-27-2012 01:55 PM

and - definitely get an all inclusive resort. you'll be eating and boozing non stop ALL day and don't need a dollar on you until you go out at night.

1215 08-27-2012 01:57 PM

lol i hate this thread because i want to go back really bad now and keep remembering the things we did.

your hotel might have a glass bottom boat that takes you out to sea for a snorkling trip at a reef. you will see some awesome things out there. and knowing you'll you might pay someone to shit on the glass boat while you film from under it. anything for content, right?

2012 08-27-2012 02:41 PM

it's a great place for tourists
don't stray too far from the path
