Because that's what people do in haunted houses. I worked in one for a couple of years when I was just out of HS. People walk through bear hugging each other and shrieking like little children, even the big burly dudes.

Silly story, but here yah go...

I was at a 'haunted house' years ago, and a god friend was playing a character... He was dressed in a harlequin outfit, against a harlequin wall, with a flashing light...

He blended into the background perfectly, and although I knew him, and I knew he was there, I still SHAT myself...

according to some comments there, they are in complete darkness, then a "car's" headlights turn on and shoot at them with big velocity. it would scare the hell out of me too :)
