Our Story of Death and Survival on the High Sea

I/we recently had an ordeal that saw my better half lose all that is valuable to her. I'm trying get as much cash together as possible to replace the things (glasses, laptop, camera and its associated gear) that she needs to get back to work.

I have plugs and links for sale in this thread.

You can read about our story here.

You can listen to our radio interview here:
Part 1
Part 2

It's a great day to be alive...

What possessed you to get in a boat without life jackets and lacking the ability to swim ?

Sounds like a recipie for disaster.

Growing up on the water and having a father that was a Coast Guard Commander your episode leaves me speechless.

Likewise, it was a disaster waiting to happen and it did.

The person in control of any craft here must ensure that every occupant has a well fitting life jacket before departure, add to that obviously no EPiRB or other safety gear is just begging to be let through deaths door.

Sorry, I've recounted/re-lived the incident enough for the time being.
Feel free to read or listen to our story...most of what you ask is in there.

One passenger a non swimmer afraid of the water, another barfing and disoriented. No flare gun. No air horn. Not enough life preservers. Improperly secured drain plug. Wow .....

.

sperbonzo 08-20-2012 08:16 AM

As a life long boater and studing for my Master's license, (vessels up to 100 tons), that was one of the most irresponsible boating stories I've read in a long, long time....

:(

Rochard 08-20-2012 08:27 AM

Post a photo of yourself as proof holding a sign that says "gfy" or something.

In Johnny's case a life-jacket would not have saved his life...it would have only extended his ordeal. Being fully submerged in 10-12 degree water he would have succumbed to hypothermia long before we were rescued.

A EPiRB would have been good. Not sure if that is law here or not. I've done some research but it is incomplete at this time.

Until this happened, I had no idea that boats had drain holes. When we realized the extent of the situation there was no time to engage a flare gun or air horn should we have had one of them with us...it happened that fast. I only had enough time to think "don't panic" even though my worst nightmare was about to happen.

Apparently, all Johny had to do was start the motor when he first realized what was happening. When he realized the plug was out it was too late. In hindsight, and my nightmares, it should have been his first thought. Hard to say what was going through his head...I never got a chance to ask him...

Yeah, I sit around and make this shit up everyday. Like I said in the OP the camera is at the bottom of the ocean. I don't have (need) a cellphone. I could borrow one from a neighbor, I suppose. However, if you did a little gfy style sleuthing in conjunction with google maps, you will soon come to the conclusion that it is I.

I really wish it wasn't...

Sounds like the boat went down because your wife was too fat.

I have been working off and on with Freedom as an affiliate for over a year. Aside from the story above, to my basic knowledge of him he is a hard working and decent guy.

I have seen this board drop cash and help for a lot sillier things, so if anyone needs links or what not might want to just help a brother out.

Do I agree that he made a stupid mistake, yeah sadly to say, I do but I can say for sure we have all made stupid mistakes in our past.

You need to ask Paul Markham for advice on begging threads. This one isn't working too well.

Txs PG. It is appreciated.

Someone on another board kindly offered to send some cash via PP. It's appreciated, but not necessary and I feel funny about the idea, so please don't do that.

3 deals are in the books. A few more and we're good to go.

Hit me up in this thread and let's do some business!

The retired fisherman couldn't swim? Is that fairly common?

Just seems bizarre to me to live your life working on the water and not being able to swim.

Many people in Newfoundland can't swim. Water is to cold.

Seen a lot of charity scams here, I don't give a fuck who cosigned you... no disrespect. You can get some stuff back by selling the computer you're typing on right now... lol

The lack of respect and level of disrespect some of you extrude is jaw-dropping to say the least.

The OP and his lady went through a life-ending experience. Regardless of how ill-prepared anyone was, is not important. Have a bit more respect for human life folks. Someone actually did die and I'm sure the OP and his lady feel like a part of them did die too so if you have any decency left, keep the negative comments to yourself. You'd feel differently if it was one of you involved.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

So this is the talel of the castways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights no motor cars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primative as can be.

So join us here each week my freinds,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."

Mathieu

You've never been here, obviously. There may be some pools here and there, but much of the province's population is scattered in outports. Getting any kind of service is an issue.

I can't fly either but I get into the odd airplane. lol And, I went with concept of "you only live once". Luckily I did go...my better half is dead right now if I didn't. Perhaps, that is why I went...

Almost drowned at an early age. Bit phobic of the water. Spent 30 years avoiding it.
