Been with Jen for 3.5 years and it was her birthday yesterday. I'd asked her Mother's permission about a month ago. She said yes. Hurrah.
Her Dad died of cancer about 8 years ago, and last year her Mum got a bench at the local village church for him, with a little plaque etc.
So for the proposal, I blindfolded Jen and drove her to the village she grew up in. I led her to the bench, and sat her down. I got down on one knee, got the ring out, took off her blindfold and said:
"I never got to meet your Dad, and this is as close as I can get to asking his permission, but please will you marry me?"
She cried and said nothing would make her happier.
So huzzah, and sorry to any industry ladies that wanted a bit of Damo Loving. Better luck next time.
