Another massive fire in town! [pics]

The fifth major fire in our small town in the past year - this time a 100yr-old manufacturing plant.

Smoke blanketed the city and could be seen 50 miles away in Hamilton, Ontario. Fire crews had to be called in from three cities to battle the blaze which is still burning as I post this.

I lucked out and was allowed to get some up close shots as firefighters began hooking up the hoses before police shoe'd us all out of the area.

That's some serious smoke.

Lots of aluminum for a 100 year old building. I'm assuming it's been updated more than a few times in that span.

It was an automotive plant that produced the rubber stripping around vehicle windows - so they're concerned there's still a lot of rubber material in the plant.

The plant closed late last fall and put nearly 400 local residents out of work - they're not sure how much material was left in the building.

Lucky the wind was blowing to the northeast away from the heavy residential area of the city...otherwise it could've gotten real ugly.

Should have sold those to the AP.

Yep.

They've caught arsonists for several of the other fires...but they suspect there's more still on the loose.

Hasn't been determined whether this was arson or accidental yet, though. The place is still smokin' this morning.

Nah, not worth my time and effort.

How does Peter Parker always get such good pictures of Spider Man? :)

John-ACWM 08-08-2012 07:17 AM

Nice pics, sorry about the sad event.

Amusing...however, SpiderMan was 30miles away at a public beach with friends and family when the fire broke out.

A Jewish judge I know calls them friction fires.
A large mortgage rubs up against a large insurance policy.

We've heard conflicting stories so far (no surprise there), but one guy who was in the building when the fire broke out says they were preparing the place for demolition. But we've also heard the place had recently been sold and was being re-developed. Who the hell knows the back room deals these days.
