Bitcoins

Bitcoins should have disappeared by now, but have been thriving. Guess here's why

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/on...n-illegal.html

It was probably customs inspections of the shipment that got this guy

http://www.afp.gov.au/media-centre/n...silk-road.aspx

But if you read the New Scientist article carefully there's a link to an old story. transactions can be traced

Coup 08-06-2012 04:35 PM

Money Laundering and drug sales are pretty much the only sane reasons to use bitcoins.

I guess all those hours spent reading about bitcoin were all for naught. I was under the impression bitcoins have no worth without actual currency. lol.

Thanks for pointing out my short comings, super genius Emil.

Coup 08-08-2012 03:54 AM

Wonder how many exchanges were "hacked" and how much internet play money was forever lost since this thread started....

LOL.

shitcoins.. bitcoins.. it's all the same really. But you wont see me trading actual money for that bullshit.

BIGTYMER 08-08-2012 06:33 AM

If we'd invested in BitCoins during all the hype we'd of lost huge!

Freaky_Akula 08-08-2012 07:06 AM

For a communist who does not understand what Bitcoins are, Coup sure does spend a lot of time trolling this thread.

slapass 08-08-2012 07:29 AM

They have gone from $6 per to $11 per in a few months so someone is buying them or using them.

bigluv 08-08-2012 08:21 AM

Except weren't they like $20 a while back?

Yes. And a bit ago they dropped down to $2.

Remember folks: Once they are gone... there's no getting them back.

Wrong on both assertions.

Sell 20 dollars worth of goods and/or services. end up cashing out to $2 in real money.

It proves that bitcoins aren't a very wise investment when there's absolutely no recourse to getting them back when they are stolen or when wallet.dats are corrupted or deleted.

You keep railing against real money but the fact remains that bitcoins have no value without it.

All value is subjective. Objects do not have any inherent value. When people accept dollars, euros or something else that's being used as money in exchange for something they are selling, they accept it because of the potential exchange value they believe it will have. They accept that money because they believe chances are good that they will be able to exchange that money in the future for goods and services they personally value.

Dollars

US Dollars have "No Real Value." But at this point I can trade them for goods, services or other currencies. If BitCoins go south, all I have is at best a screen capture of the "coins." If the US Government fell tomorrow, I could still sell the paper. Same as on eBay you can buy Confederate currency. Not worth much, but at least something.

Hell, I own 18,500 shares of Enron in electronic form. If i had a certificate, some collector would pay me for that certificate.

And that, friends, is the biggest and most unsolvable problem of all with bitcoins. They are completely intangible and only exist as a series of 1's and 0's.

Serge Litehead 08-08-2012 03:29 PM

lol, many of yous still don't get Bitcoin.

1 useless bitcoin today = 11 paper monopoly dollars

I've never seen a file corruption or hard drive crash wipe cotton from existence.

Serge Litehead 08-08-2012 03:45 PM

existing system corrupts everyday, files rarely nowadays unless you're too dumb to protect your own shit.

How a Bitcoin transaction really works:

1. Alice wants to buy something online.
2. Finds it virtually impossible to find stuff to buy, and what there is she doesn't want.
3. Uses Paypal instead.

chicken and the egg problem. how do you solve it? with this kind of argumentation nothing would get developed not paypal not cc's, nothing, nada you would be still living in a cave and pay for stuff with heavy rocks.
