Question: Hosting expectations ?

Let's say you have a fully managed server.

Your server goes down.

Do you expect the host would notice this, or should you be expected to find out yourself then notify the host?

I would have thought with any managed service that the host would have monitoring running that would inform them a server was down. :2 cents:

I think that's obvious, or at least very pleasant.

This is my view as well. Want to see if others agree.

Woke up today with one of the servers being down. Had to notify the host, on a fully managed server. Not too happy about that.

There are different levels of managed hosting but all of them should include server monitoring, imho

pornguy 08-02-2012 06:28 AM

Our host lets us know and even when its on one of the small partially managed boxes.

Server monitoring is part of a managed server if you ask me

I vote yes on this one. If they don't do it, then you should request it.

Also using a 3rd party service to monitor it yourself like http://servermojo.com/ is a good idea.

That depends... on whether you're hosting with Webair or not.

Rochard 08-02-2012 07:12 AM

The host should notice, however, it depends on what you mean by "down". The host should pick up certain things and problems, but it will not be able to detect all problems.

good point in fact.
if i have a 404 on a redirect from index, i wouldn't expect a host to call me and tell me.

Yes Yes and Yes. Hosting needs to notify when things are broken. It's their job!
