The Domain Game...

At one point I had spent alot of time and money in my eyes to find domains, sit on them (figuratively) and wait years to either develop or cash in on. I've finally given up on this game. All these extra domains started costing four figs a year to renew in total. It was becoming a problem and I hate to let some aged ones go but there is no sense in holding them unless I plan on developing them.

I've started to try and sell some of the good ones off and just let some 5-6 year old stupid DNs expire. It sucks to have incurred the expense all those years but no sense in keeping them if they are just going to get dusty.

How many of you have tons of undeveloped domains? Anyone else take the "clean out the closet" approach?

Same thing here, we need a last-minute marketplace for domains people are going to let expire in 30 days or less.

It would be a great idea for GFY to integrate an auction system like this where your domain is listed for the 30 days max or the time in which it actually expires. Good thinking brujah!

Used to have a lot more but think I'm at 465 currently. Over the last few years have sorted them into categories and actually built out a few sites on some of the better ones. Few others in my list I will eventually develop but most are bought for resale. Haven't had time to fully promote the ones I have for sale as by building sites on a few gems running those sites uses most of my time. Would say list anything you intend to drop as I buy .com domains every month and a few bucks is better than 0. I'm more interested in mainstream .coms but occasionally I'll grab some adult or refer them to friends of mine.

Usually if I cannot put my hands on the domain for one year and if it's still undeveloped by the time I have to renew it, I know it was a shitty idea and I just let it go

You should at least put something on them and not just sit on them. It isn't too hard to do a quick tube or Wordpress install and a post or two to get started. If you have to hire someone out to do a couple hours of work a week to start getting them going. If you do nothing with them you've just thrown away your money and who knows what could have been?

Good point. I normally wait until its down to the wire with a couple days before renew and this is why I have wasted $$$ I guess.

I hear ya. It sucks having what you thought was a good idea turn out shitty. 90% of the case.

Yep. All it takes is for the domain to generate five cents a day and it should cover the cost of the domain. At ten cents a day you should be able to cover 1 or 2 hours of cheap labor to initially get something up with some unique text. Then it won't cost you any of your time either. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece. When you have time or motivation go back and improve on it further. But at least this way it will be pulling it's own weight and possibly generate some profit too while you wait to do whatever you will eventually do with it. :)

I had about 2,500, I'm down to 800 now and when you look at what I have auto-renew turned off for, it's down to 550 which I'm happy with.

CYF 07-28-2012 06:13 PM

I have about 40 that are sitting undeveloped. Got rid of a bunch and now I'm down to what I'm keeping to build sites on.

AllAboutCams 07-28-2012 06:53 PM

at peak around 150 im know down to half that

If you are sitting on a bunch of domains, it is the easiest way to create content for the sites. They will gain some rank and probably earn more than their registration fees with very little work.

Anyone planning on dropping older domains send me a list. I am always looking for good ones.

I let many expire all the time now. Selling them is really too much hassle and headache for the amount most will fetch nowadays.

XPays 07-29-2012 02:03 PM

ya'll are going to love the upcoming marketplace
