Don't be evil my ass.

I hope the EU sticks it to them. The US sure as fuck isn't going to do anything.

LOL @ "The Web search leader was fined $25,000 in April for impeding a U.S. investigation into Street View data collection."

A whole $25,000...bet that stung!

That's like 25 cents to mortals like you and I.

I don't think they are still mentioning their "don't be evil" motto. Considering they want to index everything, I highly doubt they can continue to subscribe to that motto without cracking up

Fines should be a percentage of gross income, not an arbitrary slap on the hand.

"accidentally collected data from unsecured wireless networks"

accidentally...ahahaha

Ecchi22 08-11-2012 02:23 PM

I just love the way Google lies :)

shake 08-11-2012 03:25 PM

I think they dropped the don't be evil thing a couple years back. Now evil is okay as long as it's profitable.

You ever try to connect to unsecure networks with your ipad, phone or laptop while in a car? You really cannot because by the time you connect you are out of range, let alone try copying anything/

Their equipment would have been passively capturing packets (receive only), not actively chattering to initiate an agreed upon connection to an access point.

I like my flash only websites, google can suck a dick on indexing any of that magic.

The ICO told Google it must supply the data immediately so it could be subjected to forensic analysis before the ICO decided on the necessary course of action.
Translation - "Let's take a good look at everyone's data first before we decide if we should delete it."

Yeah...what was Google doing collecting that data in the first place? Kinda' makes you want to break in to a Google street view vehicle and check out the hardware they're packing.

Here is how you should read the mainstream news and media...whatever they say, the opposite is true :2 cents:

so http://m.yahoo.com/w/legobpengine/ne...& .lang=en-US is true than?

"Now"? :)

It's always been OK, as long as it's profitable. Google is just another one in the long line of companies doing it.

How much of your traffic comes from Bing/Yahoo these days?

On a side note, sent you an e-mail the other day, did you get it?

Depends on the site, but decent for most of them. I also tested a few Adsense vs Bing Adcenter mainstream ppc bidding and Bing converted by far the best.

I got your email, I'll send a reply today when I get back home :upsidedow

Capturing access point SSIDs for their geolocation service. They store the SSIDs that are reachable at their car's current co-ordinates, then when a mobile device phones home with a list of SSIDs it can see in range, Google can return an approximate (and sometimes quite accurate) location.

From memory access points constantly bleat their SSIDs, so there's no need for Google's radio hardware to do anything except listen.
