So when someone hacked your server and you have his IP...

...and the IP is pointing to a server and a domain and through the Whois I now have the name and address...

how big is the chance that the server owner has no clue cause his server was hacked as well?

because no one would be that stupid and have himself tracked that easily, right?

seeandsee 07-16-2012 01:43 PM

Probably not, but still maybe is some dickhead on other side :D

Analyse the log reports on your server or ask your provider. For sure you can find some usable info. The question is indeed if you were really hacked or if it's somebody is using a bot that abused the computer / IP from others that hacked you.

What kind of hack was it?

MaDalton 07-16-2012 03:22 PM

installed a trojan on my shop

I think it's a pretty good chance.

Tjeezers 07-16-2012 05:12 PM

I probably do not have to tell you that filestube ( . ) com is using your domain name in a file package they offer for download right.... Nah never mind, did not mean to be off topic

ps good luck fighting the bitch that is fucking your day. Should hang them all high and make them suffer.

faxxaff 07-16-2012 05:24 PM

Good hackers cover their asses. They either erase logs or change entries to point footprints elsewhere. Happened to me before. I was hacked and all logs were erased. I hated that hacker.

ladida 07-16-2012 06:16 PM

Rofl, yea, im sure its the server owner :)

VenusBlogger 07-16-2012 10:47 PM

During the last few years I noticed something similar in some sites, and after tracking them down, it was always some fucker gaining access to some NAIVE guy VPS or Dedicated and atacking from there.

The end was obvious, I blocked the fucker and the naive guy thanked me for warning him about a fucker gaining access to his server.

Unfortunately, hackers are not that stupid and know their stuff very well.

Were you running Plesk on your box?...

k0nr4d 07-16-2012 11:20 PM

Most likely the other box was hacked and was used to attack your machine. Email the owner and tell him that his shit got pwned.

This can be a script kiddie that found exploit on the Net and fired it up on your server from his own machine.

v4 media 07-17-2012 02:30 AM

Could the guy who owns the server, even if he was hacked, be liable for your losses?

Not saying go after him, just wondering?

You guys are talking about crackers, not hackers.

If somebody steals yours car and the guy makes an accident on the road, are you liable for the damage he made?

If you own a fertilizer company and out of neglect enough was stolen to blow up a building, could you be done? problably.

If you are commander of nuclear station and out of neglect enough a rocket was stolen to blow up a city, could you be done? probably

kazymjir 07-17-2012 03:27 AM

If you are owner of a teddybear and out of neglect enough was stolen and used to strangle someone, could you be done? probably too

Hilarious. Maybe consider a career change as a comedian.

kazymjir 07-17-2012 03:43 AM

Thanks, I will consider.

If somebody hacks your server, that is your problem. If somebody steals your car, that is your problem.
Breaking to a web server compared to robbing a fertilizer company... that is hilarious thing.

Not really.
Something you own not locked down used for illegal purpose.

kazymjir 07-17-2012 03:53 AM

I will bring again my first example. If somebody stole your car, that is your fault that he later caused an accident?

Also, "not locking" differs from "not updating software".
Imagine yourself on the police station when the policeman says that you can forget about insurance, because you have not upgraded your car alarm to the latest available version.

livexxx 07-17-2012 04:10 AM

put a htaccess redirect for that IP to a page that says server down, they'll move onto someone else then

Better block him in iptables. htaccess will lock only access to web server, not the whole machine.

MaDalton 07-17-2012 05:09 AM

my host has fixed everything and blocked the IP - thanks to Techiemedia!
