Buried: Digg Sells For $500,000

Quote:

The small selling price just goes to show how quickly fortunes can turn for even the hottest web startups. According to The Wall Street Journal, Digg took more than $45 million from investors since launching in 2004.

On its blog, Betaworks says it is going to fold Digg into the News.me team.

The company also vows that it is going to ?turn Digg back into a startup. Low budget, small team, fast cycles.?

People still use Digg? I thought it went the way of MySpace when Reddit came out?

Klen 07-12-2012 03:07 PM

Looks like reddit have only slightly more traffic then digg.

V_RocKs 07-12-2012 03:25 PM

Should have sold it back in 2007 to someone for $250,000,000

ottopottomouse 07-12-2012 03:34 PM

things peak then fizzle, they missed the boat massively.

The Dawg 07-12-2012 03:35 PM

Wow, thats crazy.

lucas131 07-12-2012 03:41 PM

wow, it sure still have some traffic

oppoten 07-12-2012 03:45 PM

Unbelievable how quickly things change.

Here's hoping the same happens to Google and Facebook, but I'm not holding my breath.

This isn't what happened with Digg.

They systematically destroyed the company because they couldn't retain talent and didn't move with what their users wanted.

His Infernal Majesty 07-12-2012 03:53 PM

Wow, that is unbelievable!

iSpyCams 07-12-2012 03:55 PM

Most of the traffic at Digg nowadays is indian blog spammers. They really fucked up a good thing by alienating their userbase.

Here is a fairly detailed but sarcastic look at what actually happened in comic book form:

They need to allow NSFW stuff like tumblr and reddit if they want to grow.

By NSFW I don't only mean porn.

brassmonkey 07-12-2012 04:38 PM

Since investors threw $45 mill at it and they had the chance to sell for $200 mill...

VenusBlogger 07-12-2012 05:25 PM

only 500,000 ??? incredible... same sites with same traffic were sold for dozens of millions.. cant understand this.

The Porn Nerd 07-12-2012 08:18 PM

VERY very sad. I remember when Digg was dug by everyone. Sad.

Adios Digg.

mce 07-12-2012 08:22 PM

Talk about pissing off your core community and getting left sucking dust. If Twitter doesn't stop pissing off its API developer community, there's a strong chance it might end up like another Digg http://www.ereviewguide.com/news/201...pace-and-digg/

Digg used to be a lot of fun. It was also the fastest way to get indexed. Too bad they nofollowed those submitted links and it all went downhill from there very quickly.

Are you saying Digg was holding high mostly because of webmasters submitting their sites for do follow links? I thought majority of users were regular people who did not care if link was do follow or no follow ..

seeandsee 08-12-2012 06:59 AM

Digg and stumbleupon were good, now they are nothing

Uhm, actually no, he didn't. :)

He only got $500,000 :1orglaugh

mineistaken 08-12-2012 10:58 AM

7.000.000 visitors per month thats not bad. How much do they earn from one visitor? Even if its lousy 1 cent that would still make 70.000$/month. Plus all the brand. I think they got a great deal here.

adultmobile 08-12-2012 05:53 PM

If digg is $500,000 valued, someone should check facebook's price for reality :)
