every single $1 domain from every company is limited to one per person. They have to pay almost $8 to verisign for a .com.

Well they clearly state it's free for one year and it is. That's not really a scam.

AllAboutCams 07-10-2012 11:46 PM

The premise of charging for what is given to them free by enom is. I've had thousands of domains with them. They would get a lot of respect by making that outright free.

papill0n 07-11-2012 02:19 AM

shouldn't have called it a scam though rookie

RubyGoodnight 07-15-2012 11:35 AM

Less than 700 to go (they lowered the threshold to 15K). Looks like $0.98 domain names tomorrow!

Maybe I did something wrong, but Namecheap wouldn't give me my coupon code until I at least "followed" them on Twitter...until I did that it would say I didn't meet the requirements.

mineistaken 07-15-2012 04:42 PM

this code is just for those with twitter accounts

Waiter 07-15-2012 04:51 PM

Rules

1.Twitter accounts must NOT be protected so that we can see your (re)tweet.

2.Please follow @namecheap while participating

3.You can only retweet once every 6 hours. If you fail to follow this rule, these retweets won't be counted. Additionally, accounts caught doing so might be disqualified from the promo.

4.The retweets published after 11.59 p.m. (EST) on July 15, 2012 will not be taken into account

brassmonkey 07-15-2012 05:41 PM

No you are right, charging for something offered free elsewhere isn't a scam, it's an inverted bargain!

So if some restaurants will give you free coke with your meal you would call other restaurants charging you for coke scammers?
Some registrars charge for whois, some don't its as simple as that. Also other things should be considered, 10$ domain + 3$ privacy is better than 14$ domain and "free" privacy (just a random example, not based on true facts)

Vapid - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-15-2012 08:01 PM

mineistaken, there is no inherent cost to allowing ghost whois info to be used in place of the real information. None. That's why it's uncommon to see it being charged for. It's called gouging. They are not providing a service of any monetary value but are charging money for it. You are not going to want to debate me with those straw man arguments. You are also going to want to learn the difference between products and "services". It's freely available elsewhere as in free.

Where do you get the idea that its uncommon? Most of the registrars charge for whois protection. So its pretty common.
So what that its "free"? Handjobs are also free, but some women charge for it, lol.

Whois privacy is additional and very good service for some people so its natural that service that is good and needed is being charged for. Even if that service takes few seconds of labor resources for registrars to implement.

I thought it was standard to charge for it, namecheap is the only place I get it. I have domains at godaddy, lcn and 123-reg who all charge for it.

pamon 07-16-2012 11:51 PM
