How long did it take you to build your business from ground up

From the point where you had nothing (no content at all) to buying cars/living on your own with your porn money?

Redrob 07-08-2012 05:51 PM

Started in '73 and was doing well by '75.

This was back in 1998 so it was easier, but I started with nothing. I used free hosting and free content and within about 3 months I was making some decent money. Within 6 months I was doing this full time. I got fired from my day job because I was running a porn site, but I didn't care because I was making close the same amount doing porn part time as I was working there full time so I just put all my efforts into this and never looked back.

Back in early '99, I had just started high-school but the money was pretty much coming in instantly from AVS-sites, freesites and galleries.

Sly 07-08-2012 06:26 PM

When I first started, I think six months.

I know some new guys that were running decent within six months. Some even running good within six months.

The game is "different." It isn't dead.

One thing that stands out to me is people don't really share information today. My guess would be partially due to competition, and partially because people are busy working. 10 years ago there were a lot of articles about generating traffic, making sales, so on and so forth. Many sites about it. Many message boards about it. Today, you need to do your own trial and error or you need to make a friend.

We'd built up content from about '95 - but didn't launch our first paysite until 1999. By 2001 we were buyin' the big toys...bought a new house, a few new vehicles, built a home theatre, etc.

I always considered '95-'99 mostly a hobby - so it didn't really seem to like 'work' persay. After we started the paysite...then the real work began to keep up with member updates every month.

Indeed, the old NP day's(-02) were great, lots of projects, tutorials and a very positive feel in the "community". I still have 100's of pages of printed out projects/tutorials and just plain board-talk that was interesting. Bring them out sometimes for a nostalgic read :)

2006 - went to clickcash they paid well but i discovered the meaning of shaving

2007 - topbucks.com til nowadays, best ever affiliate program

2008 - wouldnt like to name the affiliate program but made huge money with them but i hate them nowadays

2009 - went solo til today.. basically 4 years to become a superstar :D

Partnered up with Al4a in mid-90's to start a content company. (We were the first adult content company to shoot all-digital)

We went out and bought some lights and a Nikon coolpix and I spent some hours reading Phil Askey's articles online to learn what I was doing.

Put out an ad and started shooting local strippers in the Carolina's and Georgia.
Ran Ampland.Com while Al ran AL4A.Com

Basically went straight to the top in the first week. Never looked back.

I just blocked you on accident, sorry. Try again? I'm not sure how it works now, LOL. I'm about to crash for the night though anyway.

Has anyone ever started a porn site from 2010 and all the sudden made it into full time etc etc?

Paul Markham 07-08-2012 11:57 PM

Started in 1977 and within weeks was making $200 a week, sounds small now $1,000 a year in the 70s was a good wage.

It grew very fast, as I was in debt for $60,000 I kept the day job. By doing the porn in the evening and at weekends. The day job was growing well also, selling office furniture :thumbsup

1988 went full time and was till I retired in 2009.

Good thread, love hearing old war stories. Hope to have my own sometime

digitalfantasies 07-09-2012 06:29 AM

we started in 2007, did not know anything (no skills, no education, nothing).. my business partner learned some php and stuff, I just read a lot of stuff online and followed his lead... we started doing several things until we noticed we had some webcam sales... (actually my first sale was a spammy sale that came directly from a craigslist type of page, $30... we thought... he there might be some money is cams)

in 2009 we registered as a company and worked full time...

still doing so, basically only cams, we are relatively small but we make enough sales to live very comfortably in an upscale island in the Caribbean, at the end of this year I want to buy a nice house

Looking back I think we were lucky that we made sales from that one site...You have to try several things and get lucky if one of your ideas works.... I don't think we would succeed if we would start now...

In 2008 I Got ripped off for a large amount of money by an affiliate program I'm not going to name, but no one has anything good to say about them anyway.

I still had control of a small portion of the traffic I had been brokering to them, so in 2009 I spent the last little bit of money plus a loan from a friend on:

Mojohost dedicated server
Nats
(both were running really good no setup fee specials at the time)

plus:
CCBill Visa reg fee
Content

Redirected the traffic to myself and never looked back. In the beginning it helped a lot that I lived in a 3rd world country with a fairly inexpensive life, cheap rent, no car payment etc. And I literally lost weight due to lack of money but within a year things were well turned around and now I live in the US and am fatter than ever.

sojproductions 07-09-2012 07:40 AM

started in june 2006, took about a year before decent money was being made but was able to live ok from day 1, good solo models with a fanbase make things a bit easier to get started.

Never did porn, but adult dating and amateur nudes would grow so fast that it was like 7 to 10 months before I started to do better than offline biz. After 1 year I decided to trash my offline biz and work from my laptop while traveling the world. No need to buy cars ... too much traffic.

I agree fully! It's kind of inspirational.
