Anyone here ever been to the Dominican Republic?
 

....for vacation or otherwise? I am thinking about doing a family vacation there. Good, bad? Nice, dumpy?

Been there once in 2007 (Punta Cana).......never again!

I travel 4 times a year, and will never go there ever again......

Staff at the 5 stars resorts were not at all pleasant, and I ventured outside the resort once and felt anything could happen (daytime)....and I'm not the type to worry and do not care about being out at night.......

For me it's Mexico!

Punta Cana is good. You can easily find a 5-star place that's fairly new, with pleasant staff and generally the good is all right too. Plus it's affordable.

There are some very nice golf clubs in the area as well. La Cana is probably the nicest, with several holes right on the ocean.

The resort housekeepers are actually organized thieves who make bird calls to alert one another to inbound guests.

Dominican Republic - nice. Haiti - OUCH! Same slab of land, though...

A friend got married there not too long ago. I got the impression he was not very pleased with the experience . . . . of the DR, not marriage.

Club Med in Punta Cana was a great place for family vacations when I was young

the DR is full of dominicans so this is a rhetorical question

Every resort is a crap shoot really.

Staff come and go and many are nice but equally many are not friendly. Same with food, room conditions etc...

For a single guy its a great place. I would not recommend it for a family vacation unless your family is Dominican. There are so many better places to go. For a single guy though, its hard to beat.

You just have to remember that you are more or less in the wild west and nobody is going to be getting your back.

St. Maarten, St. Croix, Aruba.

And don't stay in a hotel, stay in a house rental. Much cheaper, more space for the family and tend to be more centrally located. I remember in Maui we had a B&B right in the main area but off a side street, was perfect. We went to one of the hotels one day to golf and they were a bit out there and just all hotels around. I notice that much more with inclusive resorts.

its one of the cheapest vacation destinations for a reason..

Went to DR in 2008 and had a blast. 5 Star hotel in Puerta Plata, staff were friendly and nice, no theft (there was 6 of us total) and all round a great trip. We did plenty of organized tours that took us outside the Resorts areas and never once felt in any danger.

Been with family in Punta Cana like 2 months ago.
Amazing time and great ppl as well ! I highly recommend it !

i would not stay in punta cana, instead stay in the old town... much more character.

DR is not beavercleaver family friendly.

wifey will be fucking sankies because the sexyass dominican hoes will make her insecure. kids will be grifted by tigres. you will likely be pulling your hair out or just give in and go for happy hour at the chica cabanas. maybe startup a website in the process. your mileage may vary. really though i wouldn't bring the complete fam there there. i'd bring my kids alone while the wife/exwife stayed away
