if you're hoping that affiliates will push a lot of traffic your way - your content better be excellent whatever the niche is your shooting.

Depends on how great your content is. Good isn't good enough anymore, there are already established sites on that level. So you need to be better to get the sign ups.
It will cost you a lot of money even if you shoot it all yourself. The days of cheap point and shoot are all but gone, unless you know a niche that has some demand still left.Comment

Micro-niche.......find something related to a niche already existing, build traffic, and then direct traffic to your tour....

Do it and start building your site. Just don't try to live off it for 1-2 years. Don't quit your day job. Don't forget to purchase content from others as well to build your site. You can buy content all over the place for 10% or less the cost of shooting it yourself.
Slowly build your content and traffic and in due time you can celebrate the fact that you have enough to quit your day job and live off your new profession.
