Earthquake in Melbourne

We just had a massive earthquake in Melbourne, strongest I felt in my life.

*massive for Melbourne, which is probably pretty small.

Yeah we do, usually just small tremors but according to Twitter the entire Melbourne city and suburbs (which is a huge area) got it.

They are saying 5.2 - A good rumble but very limited damage in a modern city I would have thought.

I used to live in Adelaide and have to admit I never considered quakes....

When I moved to NZ it was a different story of course.

Canberra had one yesterday. I wonder if it was connected/related at all?

Quote:

Residents of Canberra's northern suburbs were woken with a bang yesterday when a small earthquake hit at about 5.45am.

A spokesperson for Geoscience Australia said preliminary investigations pointed to the earthquake originating from about about 15 kilometres east of Murrumbateman, and measuring about 2.8 in magnitude.
People from as far away as Gungahlin, Belconnen and Yass reported hearing a bang and feeling their homes shake as a result.
The quake was smaller than the one of magnitude 3.7 that occurred halfway between Canberra and Tumut in April

I guess as one goes off others go off too. Given there was no damage it was quite exciting for a minute there. I've felt plenty of tremors in Melbourne but never something like tonight's episode.

Sophie Delancey 06-19-2012 08:29 AM
