Rep. King Calls France 'Second-Rate,' Suggests Separate Alliance

WASHINGTON ? Long Island Congressman Peter King weighed in on the touchy international standoff over Iraq on Tuesday, calling France "a second-rate country" that should be left out of any future defense coalitions.

King, a Republican on the House International Relations Committee, accused France of using its influence in the United Nations Security Council and NATO to hobble international cooperation aimed at disarming Iraq of weapons of mass destruction.

"We may have to restructure the alliance, form a new alliance which the French will not be a part of," said King. "We cannot allow a second-rate country to have a veto power or obstructionist power over American foreign policy."

The congressman argued that France also delayed successful military intervention in Bosnia and Kosovo in the 1990s.

"France is posturing itself as a moral guardian, when they would have lost World War I, and they set a world record in World War II for the quickest surrender by a world power."

King said he has had "all these French people calling me up and attacking me" since making similar comments in a BBC radio interview late Monday night, in which he said the French could go to Iraq "to instruct the Iraqis in how to surrender."

King said he is not worried about offending French sensibilities because "they are yesterday's people."

The congressman's family is so upset about France's Iraq position that his wife and daughter recently canceled a planned vacation to Paris, King said.

A spokeswoman at the French embassy in Washington did not immediately return a call for comment.

The Brits don't like the French because they are better looking, have tastier food, better wine and a much more significant collection of art. There is nothing in London that even comes close to the Louvre (nothing in the world actually).

Also, Paris is more beautiful than London.

well the British and the French have a long term love/hate relationship. It the nearest mainland neighbor to the UK, war history, constant issues over current (non war) political things, etc. But deep down, they wouldn't know what to do if the other one wasn't there to tease anymore.

I prefer London but then it is now my home and I know the backstreets, etc. It just fits me. However, I can completly understand why you would think that of Paris.

I still like Belgium more though..Bruges is almost heaven on earth for me.

Australia is one of the most egalitarian nations on Earth and I like it that way.

They believe its best to disarm Iraq peacefully and attack only as a last resort.
Many people worldwide share this view, as do many Americans.

I'm with France on this one. I like to avoid nuclear wars when I can. The muslim world is now very pro-France while France is essentially America with porn out in the open. Starts making you think maybe they don't hate America because of our culture, but because of the fact that we enjoy fucking around in the middle east.

If France and muslim countries have good relations now cause they don't wanna fuck with each other, I think France has a pretty sweet deal. I really don't give a fuck what goes on in israel and palestine. In my opinion both religions suck and we're idiots for getting involved in all that.
