Global demonstrations against Valentine's Day
These people need to get laid, nuff said
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian police have launched a massive crackdown on Valentine's Day celebrations in a bid to limit Western influences. http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/....ap/index.html BOMBAY, India (AP) -- Afraid that Valentine's Day is corrupting India's youth, Hindu nationalists raided a shop and burned greeting cards Tuesday at the start of a week of protests that in past years has seen hand-holding couples harassed and stores trashed. http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapc....ap/index.html |
Well, people demonstrated against Santa Clause and other "Western" influences.
What this indicates, really, is a growing worldwide unease about American cultural hegemony. We have the #1 entertainment industry in the world. English is rapidly expanding. Western notions about sex, sexual relations, race relations, and parental respect are spreading. Non-western traditions react either by assimilating it [Japan] or protesting against it. This is just an example of the latter. |
